The hitchhiker's guide to the Fediverse

The federated universe, or “Fediverse”, is a free and open-source alternative to commercial social media platforms. It's composed of a group of federated social networking services, which allow users of each service to communicate with users on any other service. This is typically accomplished using the ActivityPub protocol.

In this post, we'll try to present you some lesser-known federated platforms to major and famous social networks you've probably been using for years.

Mastodon is a microblogging software created in 2016. It's a decentralized software, and there are many instances on which users can register (for example, AlternativeTo is on mas.to). Each instance can customize its terms of use, functionality, restrictions, design, etc. Mastodon is mainly considered as an alternative to X icon X (formerly Twitter) and other microblogging platforms.

I would like to see PixelFed grow and not change but alot of these small social sites I just do not see growing and I hope Bluesky is a failure because Jack Dorsey ruined Twitter long before Elon Musk came along.
