What is Pleroma?
Pleroma is a free, federated social networking server built on open protocols. It is compatible with GNU Social, Mastodon, and many other ActivityPub and OStatus implementations.
The project consists of several components: Pleroma is the server implementation, and comes bundled with PleromaFE, the default frontend. Other useful utilities are also provided, such as an ActivityPub relay.

Said about Pleroma as an alternative
Interface similar to Twitter, interacts with the Fediverse, better moderation tools than Mastodon.
It supports other open source alternatives to Mastodon such as OStatus
Pleroma is part of the OStatus fediverse and the ActivityPub fediverse. Your service is only one out of many, and you can interact with users running SocialHome, Mastodon, Pleroma, PixelFed, PeerTube and other services, and like and comment on their content. If you don't like how your service is run, you can run your own and still be part of the same networks.

NipoDog added Pleroma as alternative(s) to Verismile
Twitter-like microblogging software. It has more features than Mastodon and Twitter, like Markdown support, animated custom emoji, unicode emoji "reactions", chats and more!
Bonus - It has actual .png transparency support! Both on posted pictures and avatars!
For people who don't know about fediverse - It's decentralized social network, you can seflhost your own instance or join already existing one - And you will be able to subscribe, reply etc. to any Fediverse (PeerTube, Mastodon, Misskey, Pixelfed, Lemmy...) user. As a bonus, no one can just ban you from fediverse itself - you can be banned on instance you registered on or other instance/user can refuse to let you interact with them using mute and block functions (and you can do the same, of course)
Pleroma is a great alternative to Twitter and Mastodon. It has better administrator tools and runs on less resources than other alternatives. Great for both large and small communities.
