The hitchhiker's guide to the Fediverse

The federated universe, or “Fediverse”, is a free and open-source alternative to commercial social media platforms. It's composed of a group of federated social networking services, which allow users of each service to communicate with users on any other service. This is typically accomplished using the ActivityPub protocol.

In this post, we'll try to present you some lesser-known federated platforms to major and famous social networks you've probably been using for years.

     Like

Bluesky is a new microblogging social media platform created by Jack Dorsey, the co-founder and ex CEO of Twitter. It's a direct competitor to X icon X, Mastodon icon Mastodon and Threads icon Threads. It's important to note that Bluesky is not based on the ActivityPub protocol, but on a different protocol called AT, and that was specifically developed for this service. As a result, it's not part of the Fediverse, but I still wanted to include it in this list, since it might join later on (like Threads).

The Fediverse is pretty wide, and it's composed of many different services, each with its own communities, servers, third-party apps, and so on. It can be a bit difficult at first to get used to it, but once you've started meeting people, sharing and discussing, you'll realize it's a very interesting ecosystem. And since big companies like Meta or Bluesky are now joining, it can only get bigger! 🚀

I would like to see PixelFed grow and not change but alot of these small social sites I just do not see growing and I hope Bluesky is a failure because Jack Dorsey ruined Twitter long before Elon Musk came along.
