ProjectLibre is a Java-based project management solution that gives Microsoft Project a run for its money.
ProjectLibre vs Microsoft Project opinions
It is open source and capable to open MS Project files.
gustavoalbertoelizondoOpenSource and easily manages to do most of the basic things you can do with MS Project.
I work on MacBook Pro so MS Project is not compatible.
ProjectLibre has been downloaded over 4,700,000 times for a reason. It is clearly the best alternative to MS Project. Gantt chart, Network Diagram, WBS, RBS... earned value costing etc. It is a clone of MS Project
It works really well, has a Desktop version and is compatible with MS Project.
It is very similar to Microsoft Project, but free. The GUI is a bit old styled, but the resulting project graphics are good and uses the same style as Microsoft Project.

GanttProject is a cross-platform desktop tool for project scheduling and management. It runs on Windows, Linux and MacOSX, it is free and its code is opensource. What can it do?
GanttProject vs Microsoft Project opinions
Do not work with app files
matthewraynerIt is great because it gives you gant charts free. thats the only thing it does though and though it;s great some of the others do offer more features however this is the best one that is free to use
bartovanStandalone WIndows app that is very easily installed (no server needed). Quite complete Gantt features including FS, FF, SS and SF dependencies and the possibility to change task colors. It's rather basic as project management software (no "to do" list per week, no comments on tasks, no display filters, no collaboration...), and a bit old-school looking, but as a free Gantt solution it's one of the best (together with ProjectLibre).
fm123i found it more precised, understandable and user friendly

Taiga is the easy and intuitive yet powerful agile project management tool for multi-functional teams. Taiga has a best in class Sprint task board, and you can seamlessly migrate to Kanban if needed.
Taiga.io vs Microsoft Project opinions
MS project is a computer based app, not a web app. If i wanted a (self) hosted app, I would make this very clear
It applies the modern project management methodologies (scrum, sprint, kanban...)
This is a cloud app. MS Project is a desktop app.
I disagree with the poster who gave this a thumbs down. Not everyone looking for an alternative is looking for like-to-like. For instance if one has one's own webspace and a chromebook or skips between devices then a self hosted alternative with a free starting point would be quite attractive.

Open source, many features, self hosted.

Basecamp is a web-based project collaboration tool that allows groups of people to share files, meet deadlines, assign tasks, and centralize feedback.
Basecamp vs Microsoft Project opinions
Basecamp is very simple project management software. MSP - is the complex software with a lot of functionality and methodologies. MSP is a decision for project professionals with cost value support, advanced resource management, gantt graphics and many other things.
No task dependencies, no Gantt chart.
