Protonmail is free, open-source, encrypted (more private). Lacks: calendar & good contacts feature, but these are in the pipeline. Protonmail cannot by design data-mine your software for it's own profit; Gmail makes it's money by violating your privacy that way.

Better than Gmail but i prefer tuta because they are more focused in FOSS alternatives, where as proton have some propietary services and didn't care as much of other stuff (as windows usage) But great improvement over gmail, for sure!

Proton Mail is my primary email and I have been moving away from GMail. In fact I do pay for it.

Proton Mail has been reliable and their support has been great. The UI is different and pleasant, and they have apps that cater for different platforms (Windows, macOS, Android, etc).

Tutanota is a great email provider with very good encryption (it uses end-to-end encryption like Signal – i.e. they cannot read your emails/gife them to the government, Gmail can!) and they don't sell any data. It is also very easy to use, it has a very nice app, a desktop client and a web client. There is really no reason why you wouldn't want to use it :)

Does not support POP/IMAP, you will not be able to use it with Thunderbird or another email client.

Works great and it will be a great substitute for someone looking to fully degoogle (They even use their own push service rather than Playstore's and they always support FOSS stuff as Linux, GrapheneOS and others...) If you just want your own mail and calendar this is perfect, E2EE. without AI and with their own apps :D

You get more storage space with Outlook - 15 GB of free email storage separated from 5GB free OneDrive cloud storage quota. With Gmail, it's 15GB shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos. If you stored 15GB of files in Drive then you're screwed. Outlook also allows upto 10 aliases with easy 1-click switching, so you can basically change your email address. You can't do that in Gmail. Rules & automation in Outlook is also more intuitive.

Zoho delivers everything GMail does + more! If you setup a free business account you have awesome spam control capabilities.

    • The sending IP address of Zoho Mail (135.84.80.217) is listed on none, none (0 of 130) DNSBL (DNS Blacklist)! While the sending IP addess of Gmail (209.85.128.173) is listed on 8/130 Spam Filter Lists, because Gmail is being misused by a lot of Spamers! This easily results into your Email NOT getting received at your destination!!! I am speaking from experience.

Fastmail is an Australian email company that is a complete Gmail killer: 1) You pay with money, not your privacy (they don't data-mine or sell your data); 2) Full replacement for email, calendar, contact - including mobile app. 3) 2 factor authentication (Yubikey & others), infinite catch-all email addresses, file storage. Brilliant Gmail replacement.

FastMail is the most professional mail service out there, the only problem with FastMail over Gmail is that they do not have good html template support yet, besides that, Gmail does not stand a chance.

Lack of labels - only folders. Poor and broken search function on web client (seems to scramble email details in results?) Unable to send through external addresses. Does not group multiple separate emails from same sender. No multiple star colours

At the moment, Mailbox.org is probably the best Gmail alternative: 1) You pay for the service with money, not your privacy (no data mining), 2) Excellent integration of encryption, 3) excellent Calendar and Contacts (not on mobile yet), 4) Yubikey 2FA, 5) Data stored in Germany (better privacy laws).

Best Gmail replacement at the moment. You get all the suite functions like the calendar, address book, cloud space, apps for a fair cheap price and the priceless privacy policy and encryption without losing IMAP capabilities as with some even more privacy focused email providers like Protonmail and Tutanota.
