Said about mailbox.org as an alternative
JohnFastman Mailbox is an excellent Yahoo! Mail alternative: it doesn't violate your privacy, it hasn't had 100s of millions of its accounts hacked and it didn't write scripts searching all customers' accounts for keywords for the FBI. However, it DOES have: a nice interface, calendar and contacts and encryption integration. Also hosted in Germany (better privacy laws) and supports 2FA.
JohnFastman Mailbox.org is a partial replacement for Protonmail. It offers a fully functional email solution (email, calendar, contacts), but with the added benefits of PGP encryption support (you can handle the keys or let them do it). It also allows you to send links to people who don't use PGP if you want to send private messages. For the encryption, it's a bit like Protonmail. For everything else, it's like a privacy-respecing Gmail alternative.
JohnFastman Mailbox.org is a good StartMail replacement because it offers PGP-based encryption (you choose if you want them to handle your private keys or not), and it comes with Calendar and Contacts features that are better than StartMail's. But you have to pay a little to use it. A closer 1-for-1 replacement for Startmail in terms of functionality might be Protonmail, but it has fewer features than Mailbox.org.

Very good, but not perfect.
Pros
Cons
It gets all of the major things right, and is recommended. But it could be improved.
None of the negatives are showstoppers, the way they have been with other services. Posteo.de, for example, was great, but I could not get the calendar to integrate with Android properly, no matter what. That works with Mailbox.org. I realize it's because Ox Sync explicitly supports Mailbox and not Posteo, and that's not Posteo's fault, but the end result is that it works for Mailbox, and that's what matters.
In terms of the security, and privacy, which are the reasons you choose a service like Mailbox in the first place, they meet expectations, and at a low price point.
Excellent privacy, inexpensive, supports custom domains and catch-all, and also has Calendar and Contacts on the web app and with Caldav/Carddav support for syncing with mobile devices or apps like Thunderbird.
