Privacy-Respecting Apps and Services (Computers)

Choose freedom and continued democracy by switching away from big tech in your personal digital lives.

Not all apps and services listed will be open source or even free (as in free beer), but they will at the very least be privacy-respecting.

Of course, there will be a few exceptions, simply because they are necessary for some people, like for work. BUT, THEY ARE NOT NECESSARY FOR YOUR PERSONAL LIFE. Work-life balance is important.

This list will get updated from time to time.

Each section lists my recommendations in order of best (in my opinion) to good enough. Except for the Docs and OS sections, which are listed from easiest for beginners to better for creatives, techies, and professionals. These and the Video Conferencing section, which is listed based on needed for work to good enough for personal use.

Lastly, the Linux operating systems (or distros) are at the end of the list because no matter which you choose, the majority of these apps can be installed on Windows, and can certainly be installed on any of the distros.

  1. Free as in Freedom; Not Free as in Free Beer

The reason proprietary companies have been able to abuse their power this much is because they offer convenient services for free in exchange for user data that seemed harmless in the beginning.

Apart from switching to alternatives, I ask you to get rid of the “everything is free” mindset that brought us here, and to instead pay $1 USD/month to the developers of the apps/services you use the most.

To take it a huge step further, get your government to pay for the development of these open source apps/services.

This ensures they have the means to continue developing the apps, while also being able to employ others to make changes and improvements requested by the user community.

Many open source developers get less than $1000 USD per year and still provide the world with good alternatives. Multiply that $1 USD per month by just the adult population of your country, and you can imagine how much better open source apps/services could be with additional developers bringing new ideas and manpower.

  2. Web Browsing and Internet

We start with web browsers — the one thing everyone has in common on any device and any operating system. It is also the main reason why most people can switch to Linux — because as far as the internet is concerned, most people spend the majority of their time using a web browser.

  3. An efficient ad-blocker for Firefox-based browsers. If you insist on using a Chromium-based browser for personal browsing, then at least use uBlock Origin Lite — it does a good enough job.

It used to work on Chromium-based browser like Google Chrome, Vivaldi, and Microsoft Edge, but it has been removed from these browsers and most other Chromium-based ones in 2025 because Google doesn't want you to block ads.

However, this is not the case for Firefox-based browsers, nor the Brave browser (which is Chromium-based).

  5. This is Firefox, but with privacy on by default, AND customisation similar to Vivaldi and Microsoft Edge.

From my experience, Firefox add-ons are superior to and more effective than Chromium add-ons, but that would be specific to the add-ons I have used. Your mileage may vary.

Use this, Zen or Floorp below if you are looking for something close to the Vivaldi experience when it comes to built-in features and customisation.

FireDragon is currently based on Floorp, and is now also available on Windows and MacOS.

  6. This is, again, Firefox but with vertical tabs (only) and several Zen-specific extra features. It's an excellent browser all round, but it doesn't (yet) have the traditional horizontal tabs, so if this is a deal-breaker for you, then I'd recommend FireDragon if customization is your thing.

Experience a privacy-focused, open-source browser rich with features like vertical tabs, Split View, Zen Glance, and extensive security protocols. Built on Firefox, it's currently in beta, emphasizing privacy and adaptability, with future plans for horizontal tabs.

Despite its name, Floorp has done some good things in the web browsers space in terms of customisation and sane/expected defaults. It is also based on Firefox.

If you're not yet ready to switch to Linux, and you want something like FireDragon rather than Zen, then Floorp works on Windows just fine.

Google Chrome without the Google, and with some privacy defaults. There are some design changes, but they aren't bad. Use this if your job requires that you use a Chromium-based browser. I use it every day for this purpose only.

Also, unlike most other Chromium-based browsers, Brave has made the commitment to keep supporting uBlock Origin, despite having its own built-in and effective ad blocker.

If you need a personal browser, I recommend something Firefox-based.

  9. YouTube

Don't watch YouTube directly unless they force you to. Use these apps instead. FreeTube and Grayjay allow you to stream videos over the internet, while jDownloader and Youtube-DLG allow you to download the videos and watch them offline. In all cases, you don't give Google any more information about your interests.

I personally use FreeTube to "subscribe" to channels (yes, you can still subscribe, but privately) and jDownloader to watch offline. The Grayjay slogan/mantra is something to take note of: Follow creators, not platforms. Take it a step further - Support creators, not platforms.

  19. Security and Passwords

I've intentionally placed password managers just above social media, instant messengers, and email, because before you start making accounts with services, it would be a good idea to ensure your future passwords are safe and well-organised.

KeePassXC and OneKeePass are both password managers and OTP/2FA tools in one. Their names are similar because they are based on the same secure open source technology. They also don't require you to create an account and provide an email in order to use them, like Bitwarden. That said, Bitwarden is more popular, though, so if popular is your thing, it's still just as good.

Lastly, a web browser's built-in password manager is not as secure as you might think. It's objectively better and recommended to use a dedicated password manager.

For social media, I recommend ActivityPub. It's a protocol that allows separate social networks (and other services) to communicate the same way separate email providers can communicate. Every other social network that doesn't have a similar feature is/has been doing it wrong the whole time.

  47. This is more similar to what MS Office users would expect. However, it has both Russian origins and development. Build it from source rather than downloading it directly. If you don't know what that means, use LibreOffice instead. You can't know if it is doing more than just being an office suite when you don't build from source.

Open-source office suite offering document, spreadsheet, and presentation editing with co-editing modes, plugin support, integration across 30+ services, robust security, and mobile access. Available in Community, Enterprise, and Home Server editions for versatile deployment.

  48. Cloud Storage

  49. Okay, so I lied. Not all of these apps and services are available on Linux. This one in particular. At least, not yet. I've included it because once it does become available, it is likely going to be better than both pCloud and Filen for Linux users.

That said, both Filen and pCloud are great alternatives. I've used and tested them for years. Mega is also great in terms of usability.

Proton Drive offers comprehensive privacy with end-to-end encryption, Proton Drive allows users to store, synchronize, and share files across various devices through web, desktop, and mobile apps. All in all, with a little patience and willingness to learn, you can take back control of your privacy and autonomy by using the apps and services in this list, or you can find alternatives by clicking on them. These are just my recommendations.

Lastly, the screenshots for many of these recommendations are outdated or even misrepresentative; this is a limitation of AlternativeTo. So in some cases, it may be better to either go to the app or service's website or download the app and try it out yourself.

Please remove all Discord, Skype and Zoom all three of them are extremely privacy invasive. This is a known fact ! Skype is Microsoft property. Discord while introducing e2ee on calls store all message on plain text on Google servers while having a bad privacy policy. Zoom has made the headline lying about e2ee to its investors and also have one of the worst privacy policy. You should put something like Jitsi on your list instead of these nightmare data harvesting products.

Didn't notice your comment until now. That said, I understand your concerns, but I did include disclaimers regarding my inclusion of some specific apps. I have since (or I am updating) updated the list with info pointing to the fact that Element, Fluffy Chat and Signal can achieve what the mentioned proprietary apps can.

Actually, this info was already there as well, so the only changes are mentioning Jitsi and Jami.
