What is ONLYOFFICE?
ONLYOFFICE is an open-source, online office suite that includes editors for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and forms. It supports all common formats and MS Office files.
ONLYOFFICE Docs allows users to create and edit objects, format texts and paragraphs, use academic layout tools, and add third-party plugins for functions such as translation, thesaurus search, video insertion, and more. The form editor lets users build and fill online forms and document templates, with the option to export completed files as fillable PDFs. The document viewer supports PDF, DjVu, and XPS files.
ONLYOFFICE Docs supports collaboration with features like two co-editing modes, comment addition with mentions, Track Changes, document version browsing and restoration, and file comparison. It ensures data security with end-to-end encryption, HTTPS, JWT, and limited cache lifetime.
The software can be integrated into over 30 existing platforms such as Nextcloud, ownCloud, Jira, Redmine, Confluence, Alfresco, among others. New integration apps can be created using Open API.
ONLYOFFICE Docs is available in three editions: the free Community Edition, the Enterprise Edition, and the Home Server. The Developer Edition allows the addition of document editing and collaboration functionality to any service.
ONLYOFFICE Workspace combines ONLYOFFICE Docs with a productivity platform that includes DMS, project management tools, CRM, mail, calendars, and a social hub. It's available as a cloud service and as a self-hosted solution.
ONLYOFFICE Docs can also be used as ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors. Mobile editors are available for both iOS and Android.
Comments and Reviews
Microsoft's over-priced, buggy and privacy-invading Office suite has an unjustifiably large market share. (Read my review of Microsoft Office Word here). I know several people who are fed up of the Microsoft way of doing things and want to move away, for example to Linux. One of their fears is that Libre Office won't satisfy their requirement to stay compatible with colleagues or friends who stay on Windows/Mac.
Only Office to the rescue!
I have run Only Office on Windows, Mac and Linux (Manjaro) and have had a relatively positive experience all around. On Windows I had a complaint or two: it was slow to load and changed my preferences for which app opens .pdf files. But that's it. On all platforms, it seems that after the initial install, the first run is a bit buggy or that Only Office even crashes. Subsequent uses are perfectly reliable, however, so if you try it, please keep a little bit of patience in reserve until the app "warms up". It should be worth your while.
Having said that, Only Office does have some features missing that MS Office and/or Libre Office have, e.g:
The developers of Only Office have done a very good job so far. I hope they continue and succeed.
It's only considered freemium because the paid version is a full office suite for companies. This is not the usual freemium software that will put water marks on your files or restrict use in any way.
The desktop editor looks nice, but still lack some basic feature like image cropping, shadow, custom spacing, advanced animation, etc.

It looks like MS Office, has add-ons and is easy to use
On the bright side, Only Office does a very credible job of imitating MSO and does it well. I especially like that it keeps the formatting intact and actually renders the fonts correctly, something that some of the other MSO clones do not. Where Only Office needs work, however, is its editing/collaborative mode. Some of the choices it does (putting boxes around everything) is odd. The editing and deleting of stuff is also weird and the spellchecker is beyond atrocious, but all that, I'm sure can be worked out in time. One thing that is not related to the software itself that I do not endorse is the way the website does such a hard sell. They very much bury the free version and expect families to cough up for a home server instead of just offering them the free version and then upselling later. The company has some questionable things, but overall the product is mostly solid. Get it and enjoy, but be aware there are some issues.
