FOSS. No paid subscription BS. It won't irretrievably delete your data after 1 year of inactivity like Todoist does, since it gives you absolute control over your data. No telemetry, privacy-focused.

The free plan offers more than that of Todoist (e.g. tags).

TickTick looks like a ToDoIst knock-off, they have a very vague privacy policy, the parent company is based in Hong Kong, no replies to emails about how they store user data, how long it would take to delete if I cancelled or how they handle credit card info. I wouldn't trust them with any private information.

Workflowy is a good alternative to ToDoIst in that it's more flexible for making hierarchical notes and lists. It's a bad alternative in the sense that it has no parsing or calendaring features. "Meet Jim on Monday" remains as text and is not parsed as a new task scheduled for Monday.

RememberTheMilk and Todoist have very similar feature sets. I'm a diehard RememberTheMilk fan myself, though. I can type a new task and all its metadata very fast with only the keyboard. Between not needing the mouse and RememberTheMilk's fast interface, I spend very little time messing with my software and more time getting work done.

Lunatask respects your privacy and end to end encrypts your tasks, calendars, and more. The app also has multiple formats to display your same tasks, so there is no switching apps needed to try other task formats.
