Powerful Open Source Creative Suites

Ever wondering about free great open source software to start your idea? Here's a list for you to get started.

Also mentions several rarely known and newer software as well!

Please note that almost none of these alternatives are 1-to-1 replacement with exact some features. Most of these software might have entirely different scope of project.

Notable event: Libre Graphics Meeting, annual meeting on Free/Libre and Open Source software for graphics. https://www.libregraphicsmeeting.org

  1. General Graphics

  2. Krita icon
     Like

Professional-ready sketch and painting software with animation capabilities.

For user from PaintTool SAI icon PaintTool SAI, Adobe Photoshop icon Adobe Photoshop, MediBang Paint icon MediBang Paint, ibis Paint X icon ibis Paint X, or SketchBook icon SketchBook, this software have anything you need.

If you're Clip Studio Paint icon Clip Studio Paint user, it lacks a lot of unique feature that CSP have. (Especially if you come from professional Japanese manga/animation production pipeline). Potential CSP features addition such as comic creation utilities (both book and webtoon layout) and sub-tooling are still in dicussion. Krita also does not have flexible windowing system to work on multiple artwork (I already made feature request for this).

For Expresii icon Expresii and Rebelle icon Rebelle users, there's no realistic water paint emulation yet.

For openCanvas icon openCanvas user, go use Clip Studio Paint icon Clip Studio Paint instead (for now, it's paid tho).

  3. Alternative to Live2D Cubism icon Live2D Cubism software suite, for creating live animated character, the one that usually featured in Japanese visual novel (especially galge) and Virtual Youtuber.

Still not as capable to match existing industry standard (still in early development stage). Only recommended if you're merely using it for indie games or Vtuber character.

They also have active Japanese contributors, so it might not too far from what Japanese ACG industry needs.

The dev recently changed their software from free to freemium, as they want to fund the development. It cost 20USD, but you can still "evaluate" it for free with 10 seconds reminder screen at startup.

Image editor software. If you ever tried GIMP five or ten years ago, it might be the best time to revisit GIMP, as it has tons of improvement.

While the software itself is powerful, it requires a little bit of learning, especially if you're coming from Adobe Photoshop icon Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Photo icon Affinity Photo, or Pixelmator icon Pixelmator.

GIMP 3.0 forward brings a lot of new features and improvement, after more than 10 years of fixing underlying base to be more future proof. Notably: shape tools.

Amazing list !

Very cool list! So many apps I've not heard of before. Some suggestions to add to the list:

  • Shotcut is another good video editor.
  • 7zip - best compression utility I have ever used.
  • Would OBS Studio count as media? I use it extensively for screen recording

Added Shotcut to the list :)

7zip is too general that I don't consider them as creative tool, while OBS is basically de facto standard of screen recording already 🤔

Shaz Shah

Yeah. That's fair. I guess my rationale is from a screen recording perspective. OBS, while I really like it, can be a tad overkill for the use case of needing a simple and straightforward screen recorder. As someone who records training videos, I've found myself reaching for Kooha on Linux and fornWindows it would be ShareX.
