GIMP is a superb cross-platform (Win, Mac, Linux) alternative to Paint.NET because it's open source and has a huge range of functionality. It is less suited for those situations where you're seeking a very simple image editor, without fuss. But it's still cross-platform, which Paint.NET isn't. So it depends what "alternative" means to you.

Whereas Paint.NET is a very simple and user friendly program that's easy to use, GIMP is incredibly unforgiving, difficult to learn/use and lacking the welcoming and uncomplicated interface of Paint.NET. Moreover it has functions that just completely stop working for no reason

The #1 perk of paint.net is how lightweight and fast it is, it's intended as a competitor to Paint. GIMP is the complete opposite- it's a big, slow monster designed to compete with photoshop.

It doesn't share the same feature set. While it can do many things Paint.NET can't, the opposite is also true.

GIMP is much more "professional". By that I mean that it is way too complex for a casual editor like myself.

There isn't anything else exactly like paint.net, but Krita comes the closest in terms of features and ease of use. It's relatively intuitive, has various customization options, and is sufficient for basic photo editing and more advanced image manipulation and drawing.

Krita is also very similar to photoshop, and if you find the features easily enough and do enough research it has ALOT more features than paint.net while having the easy navigation that paint.net has. Also it's free!

Krita is built from the ground up for painting and drawing. Paint.net is for rapid image editing like making memes or cropping/adjusting photos. Krita is heavier and less intuitive.

Works well enough. Still rough around the edges, but it received an update one month ago that fixed quite a lot of bugs. Not gonna be a 1to1 replacement, but it's the closest I know of, and it does a pretty good job.

Pinta is modeled after Paint.NET, making it good for basic adjustments, drawing simple shapes, and so-on. Unfortunately, it's buggy and lacks some of the outstanding features that have been added to PDN since 2015. While it's the best replacement for PDN so far, I wouldn't say it's a very good one.

It gives you a good taste of Paint.NET, but it's so broken and painful to work with that it just isn't worth using; e.g. the text function doesn't work.

It's not exactly discontinued, the GitHub project is still very much active as of January 2019. The 2015 stable release is more or less feature-complete compared to Paint.NET.

Actually, Paint.NET is supposed to be a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. While Paint.NET is very powerful, Adobe Photoshop is the superior when it comes to editing. If you want nice free results, Paint.NET is your best bet. If you want amazing results and the best tools and are not afraid to drop in some money, Adobe Photoshop is a very great choice.

MyPaint looks a lot like Photoshop. Paint.NET is so popular because of the simplicity. Photoshop is a beautiful program with a lot of options. Paint.NET is a simple "paint" program that allows you to go as you like, but keep it simple at the beginning. MyPaint is like a Photoshop lite.
