It has one of the most transparent configuration dialogs. That caused me to trust Thunderbird more than any other mail program. In addition, it allows a lot of customizations through config and extensions.

Decent, but stagnant

Thunderbird is a good app, but it seems to be stagnating. Mozilla is too busy trying to copycat Chrome and not putting any time into fixing TB bugs.

I hate Thunderbird because it feels dated, but there's no better program which is open source and cross platform alternative.

What don't you like about TBird other than "hate" and "feel" ?.
After the current FireFox quantum fiasco ... be careful what you wish for !

Checkout Mailspring. It's a more modern program which is far prettier on the eyes, and much easier to use. It's a little less stable than Thunderbird, I'm pretty sure it doesn't have extension support yet and it's not completely open source.

Also, Firefox has gotten noticeably faster since the quantum update. You can read my thoughts on it here (both the Change is... good? and Firefox was slower paragraphs are relevant).

Mozilla neglects Thunderbird

about Thunderbird · Aug 2014 · Helpful Not helpful 3 Helpful Report as spam

Thunderbird is a great e-mail program, but unfortunately Mozilla neglects it: it only releases security and stability updates, and only community developes new features.

at least it has got security and stability update... otherwise I would have to rely on ultra slow Microsoft outlook!

Meanwhile, it's july 2015 and the neglect is only getting worse. Basic features like new mail sound and popup don't work and the devs don't give a damn about the bugzilla tickets, their windows debugging server is down so any reports from windows users are unusable (or so I understood) and they don't give a damn, the latest version crashes on startup for no apparent reason and once again they don't give a damn because "it affects a marginal number of users", etc. I'm getting really ****** fed up with them because of what they're doing to tb and ff; it's all going down the drain lately. I wish I could find a proper alternative. Claws mail is nice but lacks easy html email handling, inky is too dumbed-down, etc
