Web-browser, advanced e-mail, newsgroup and feed client, IRC chat, and HTML editing in one application. Itis built on the open source Mozilla Gecko engine, the same code which underlies Thunderbird and is the base for the Firefox browser.

Comment summary: SeaMonkey is appreciated for its all-in-one suite including browser, email, and HTML editor, resembling an updated Netscape Communicator. It is favored for low resource usage and functionality, though it lags in updates and modern web standards, affecting compatibility with certain sites. Users value its performance, yet note missing Firefox features and a dated interface. SeaMonkey remains a viable option for those seeking a consistent user experience over visual appeal.

Comparing SeaMonkey to just another web browser is unfair to the other web browser. SeaMonkey isn't just a web browser. Netscape used to offer a full suite of tools, I never found another web browser which offered as much. SeaMonkey took over where Netscape left off, and they have kept the project active. Nothing on the alternative list is really an alternative at all.

If the cosmetics aren't what you like try some skins. Or make one to suit you.

Might be a winner if you are into IRC .. they have shortcuts to it.. though I hear IRC is not very secure. From the start, I am finding it awkward to use.. it's the little things, like not having the + icon to click to make a new tab, difficulty in finding Settings. There is a Beta version out. I'm new with 2.53.14 September 29, 2022, and I will give it more time. There are some setting options I like better than chrome.. the cookie handling seems easier.

I like Seamonkey because they are a lot of good functionalities (like composer) that we not found in the actual Firefox or Chrome.

(Sorry for my bad English)

But I glad that you don't use Google Translate at least 😉 Sure... English is an experience that comes with time 😄

Sadly, it's fallen badly behind the times; the Internet moves fast, and SeaMonkey doesn't. My family has been using SeaMonkey for many years on Windows, up through and including Windows 10. It was a solid product, and offers the integrated suite of browser, email, etc. for those who want that. Unfortunately at this point it seems to have a very limited community supporting it, having gone for over a year without updates (late July 2018 to early September 2019).

The current version is based on Firefox ESR 52 and more and more websites are considering it an obsolete browser, making it hard to recommend. For example, one of our banking sites will no longer permit logging in using SM. We also find various minor glitches, such as the inability to look through all of the product photos in pop-ups on some shopping websites. These aggravations are individually small but getting ever more numerous.

The home page reports plans to update to the ESR 60 code base, but the current FF ESR is 68, so SM will still be lagging considerably. This has pushed us to migrate to Firefox + Thunderbird, in place of SM, in order to have "modern" Internet applications.

I give it 4.5 stars, historically, but only 3 stars for use today.

In my opinion this is one of the best web browsers out there. There are a couple of minor issues.

  1. It segfaults (crashes) on OpenBSD but not on Linux.
  2. Some modern javascript does not work (e.g. camera)

Reincarnation of an older Netscape Navigator suite, that I used to love back in late 90-s. Works reasonably well today as well.

What is SeaMonkey?

The SeaMonkey project is a community effort to develop the SeaMonkey all-in-one internet application suite. A lighter alternative to Mozilla Firefox icon Mozilla Firefox. Such a software suite was previously made popular by Netscape and Mozilla, and the SeaMonkey project continues to develop and deliver high-quality updates to this concept. Containing an Internet browser, email and newsgroup client, HTML editor, IRC chat, web development tools, and with plenty of add-ons available, SeaMonkey is sure to appeal to advanced users, web developers and corporate users, as well as to those who need a fast, yet modern, web browser.
