PowerToys Run 2.0 will launch in 2025 with a major UI redesign and support for extensions
Microsoft has hinted at a significant future update for PowerToys Run, one of its most popular utilities within the Microsoft PowerToys toolset, with version 2 expected in 2025. Known for its powerful launcher and search capabilities, PowerToys Run offers extensive customization, making it a strong alternative to Windows 11's built-in search and other popular third-party alternatives like Keypirinha, ueli or Wox
The new version will feature a redesigned user interface with a sidebar panel, improved contextual information, and enhanced integrations for actions beyond searching files and apps. A revamped extension model will also let third-party developers create app-specific extensions, enabling access to tools like Figma or GitHub directly from PowerToys Run.
These new changes and the addition of extensions are strongly reminiscent of how Raycast works, which, it’s worth noting, has announced official support for Windows coming soon, suggesting that 2025 will be an exciting year for these two alternatives.

Unfortunately Power Toys are just a bunch of tools that you already have open source variants available, but Microsoft version is way less optimised, using too much ram and CPU. About the lack of mandatory login for AI and data gathering/theft I wouldn't hold my breath..
Not to destroy your vision of PowerToys but it has AI features. ;-) Extended Pasting has an AI feature that uses the OpenAI-API.
PowerToys is a really useful collection of Windows enhancing utilities. Though I don't use all the utilities, where my preference is Flow Launcher rather than PowerToys Run. Let's see if the refresh in 2025 lives to the hype.
