Google launches Android 17 with AI agents, doomscrolling controls and better creator tools

Google has launched Android 17, the latest version of its mobile operating system, with updates across digital wellbeing, content creation, cross-platform sharing, Android Auto, security, and device migration. One of the most notable additions is Gemini Intelligence, which brings agentic AI capabilities to Android phones so the assistant can interact with apps and complete more specific tasks through verbal commands. Still, Android 17 goes beyond AI with updates for app limits, mobile video recording, Quick Share, iPhone migration, Android Auto, and security.

One of the most notable non-AI features is Pause Point, a digital wellbeing tool designed to help stop doomscrolling by adding a 10-second delay before opening distracting apps, along with breathing prompts, session timers, and stronger friction to disable it. Android 17 also adds Screen Reactions, which lets users record their screen while appearing on top through the selfie camera to create reactions videos or tutorials, basically like those TikTok and YouTube Shorts videos where someone talks over another video, so hopefully you like them, because they are probably about to get even more common 😬. The update also brings improved Instagram support with Ultra HDR, Night Sight, tablet optimization, exclusive Edits features, Adobe Premiere Pro on Android, APV video format support on select flagships, and redesigned 3D emoji with more depth and detail across all 4,000 Android emoji.

The update also improves connectivity and switching between devices. Quick Share and AirDrop interoperability is expanding to more phone makers like Xiaomi and apps like WhatsApp, while iPhone-to-Android migration will support wireless transfer for files, contacts, messages, home screen layouts, and eSIMs. Android Auto is also getting a redesigned Material 3 Expressive interface and deeper Gemini integration in cars with Google built-in. Security upgrades include scam call protections with supported banks, improved malware behavior detection, APK download checks in Chrome, stronger PIN protections, and remote biometric locking through Find Hub.

Google says several features will roll out first to Pixel and recent Samsung Galaxy devices this summer, with broader support for other Android phones and apps arriving later this year.

So why everyone mentioning Gemini features like Android features? Gemini is not part of the Android, it is a closed source proprietary Google app. This particular app getting new features has nothing to do with Android. The same goes for Quick Share and its AirDrop interoperability as well as Google Chrome's APK checks. People have become so out of touch that they think whatever Pixel phones have or whatever Google develop is Android.

Same goes for "installing" an apk to "side-loading". Like you want to side-load chrome-installer.exe on windows. Makes no sense.
