What is WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is an iPhone and Android messaging app which allows you to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS.
In addition to basic messaging WhatsApp users can create groups, send each other unlimited images, video and audio media messages.
You can use WhatsApp on your web browser too. WhatsApp Web is simply an extension of your phone: the web browser mirrors conversations and messages from your mobile device -- this means all of your messages still live on your phone.
To connect your web browser to your WhatsApp client, simply open https://web.whatsapp.com in your browser. You will see a QR code --- scan the code inside of WhatsApp, and you’re ready to go. You have now paired WhatsApp on your phone with the WhatsApp web client.

WhatsApp is one of the most widely used messaging apps, offering a simple and reliable way to stay connected across mobile and desktop. It supports text messages, group chats, voice and video calls, and easy sharing of photos, videos, and documents—all over an internet connection.
The biggest advantage is its massive user base, making it the go-to choice for everyday communication. The interface is clean and easy to use, even for non-technical users.
Cons: Limited customization and fewer advanced features compared to some competitors. Privacy has improved with encryption, but still raises concerns for some users.
Verdict: A solid, user-friendly messaging app that excels in accessibility and reliability, especially because almost everyone already uses it.
Facebook bought this company basically to spy on people (teens) not wanting to use FB or to keep their marketshare. Use Telegram or Signal instead to keep competition, also Telegram is the app WhatsApp copies.

Meta says it's E2E encrypted, not sure if a third party has verified the claim or made an audit. Everybody uses it where I live. I wish I could convince everybody to switch to something else, but I can't. So, no escape. On a brighter note, it's gratis and works well. BTW, I hope that people worried about WhatsApp for privacy reasons are not "texting" using SMS, because that's a privacy nightmare, much worse than WA.
Authoritarian government in Türkiye blocks WhatsApp group join links. Provides government with access time, devices and logs.
Bloated, intrusive, fake end-to-end encryption, data theft, no privacy.
Can you back any of that up at all?
signal protocol with extra bloat and spying. use signal by the signal foundation which develops the signal protocol.
WhatsApp is my go-to for texting, and honestly, I wouldn’t mind paying a buck a year for it. There are plenty of other apps that offer free calls and cool stickers, but WhatsApp just gets it right with its simple layout. Sure, you can try using LINE, WeChat, or Viber, but WhatsApp is a must-have since you can't really make everyone use your favorite app. Not in India, anyway!
