Microsoft launches its largest Windows 11 update with over 150 features and improvements
Microsoft has launched a significant Windows 11 update, introducing about 150 new features and improvements. One of the biggest key addition is Windows Copilot, an AI-powered assistant now part of the Windows 11 desktop. The update also brings AI upgrades to Microsoft Paint, Snipping Tool, and the Windows 11 Microsoft Photos app. Paint now offers transparency and layers, and a new AI image generator, "Paint Cocreator", allows users to create images from text prompts and styles using DALL-E. The Snipping Tool can now extract and copy text from images, and automatically hide/blur sensitive information. The Photos app has a new background blur feature for emphasizing photo subjects and many more little details.
The update also includes changes to Windows Backup, which now supports cloud-based migration for easy transfer of settings and apps to a new PC. Microsoft has introduced Passkeys, a passwordless sign-in option using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN technology. This technology has been implemented by multiple services and platforms throughout the year, such as Google, Apple, WhatsApp, TikTok, or several password managers like 1Password or Bitwarden The File Explorer has been revamped with a new UI, large file thumbnails, and a carousel interface. Gamers will also get some love with native RGB lighting controls, "Dynamic Lighting," supported by various hardware manufacturers, the ability to choose drive and folder options for games from the Microsoft Store and the Xbox App, and 'instant games' in the Store, which can be play instantly without need to download, some sort of Xbox Cloud Gaming but for more casual games and limited to the Windows Store only.
For IT administrators and developers, the update includes Windows 365 Cloud PC, simplifying the switch between local and cloud desktops. Dev Home provides a streamlined method for developers to set up coding environments using Windows Package Manager CLI and cloud-based tools. Microsoft has also announced the Windows 11 2023 Update (version 23H2) for the fourth quarter of 2023, which will bring a new volume mixer, native RAR and 7-zip support, and taskbar improvements.
