Apple introduces Passkeys for passwordless sign-in experience on iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma
Apple has introduced support for Passkeys in the latest beta versions of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma, improving and providing more secure options in the way users sign in to their Apple IDs. Beta users now have the option to authenticate without using a password, relying solely on the biometrics of their iPhone or MacBook. This cutting-edge feature works seamlessly across all Apple devices, including Google Chrome, Safari, Mozilla Firefox or even Arc Browser
With the Passkey feature enabled, Apple ID users can enjoy a passwordless sign-in experience, making authentication faster and more convenient than ever before. However, it's important to note again that Passkeys are currently limited only to the recently announced first beta versions of iOS 17, iPadOS 17, or macOS Sonoma. Attempting to use Passkeys when signing in using an iPhone on a Windows PC might encounter the need to use previous login methods, but Apple has indicated plans to extend support to non-Apple devices in the future.
The convenience and security provided by the Passkey feature cannot be overstated. Once a Passkey is created on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, it automatically syncs across all Apple devices, ensuring a seamless biometric login experience for Apple ID sign-ins. This new authentication method alleviates the need to remember and manage passwords while offering robust security. With Passkeys, Apple ID users can embrace a future where traditional passwords become obsolete, replaced by biometrics and cutting-edge technology for a simpler and more secure digital journey, similar to what other companies like Google, LastPass, 1Password, Dashlane, or Bitwarden have recently done.
