Dashlane launches Passkey support on Android with the Credential Manager Library

Dashlane, a leading password manager, has recently launched passkey support on Android, offering a better alternative to the typical authentication methods for its users. This new feature comes in conjunction with the release of Android 14, which introduces an innovative library called "Credential Manager." Unlike previous solutions limited to passkeys, this library extends its support to encompass passwords as well.

The Credential Manager library offers a secure and streamlined approach to storing and retrieving username and password combinations within the user's chosen password manager. When logging into an application, the Credential Manager queries all registered password managers to fetch the relevant credentials, including passwords and passkeys. This eliminates the hassle of manually entering email addresses/usernames and passwords, providing users with unparalleled convenience. Dashlane is fully prepared to support users in adopting the Credential Manager library, ensuring robust passkey management capabilities for a secure and effortless authentication experience.

Dashlane's passkey support is available across multiple devices now, including web (with web extension management slated to arrive soon), Android, and iOS platforms (released a couple of weeks ago), enabling seamless authentication experiences wherever users go. To use the feature with the platform, Android 14 must be installed, and users need to activate Dashlane as an Identity Provider in their device settings. To showcase the passkey creation and login process while safeguarding user privacy, Dashlane has developed an open-source demo application. When created, passkeys are securely stored in Dashlane's vault, allowing users to conveniently edit, add notes, and modify their passkeys as needed. And while passkeys can currently be generated from an Android browser, only the Canary version of Google Chrome supports passkeys with third-party providers. However, Dashlane is actively working on expanding passkey support to other browsers in the future. The eagerly anticipated passkey sharing feature is set to be introduced in the coming updates.

Passkeys in general is a great technology since it offers enhanced security and resistance against phishing attacks, as we discussed some time ago in our article 'Could 2023 be the last year for traditional passwords?'. And to answer the question, it seems that 2023 is indeed the year of widespread adoption of passkeys, as Dashlane is just another one of the major companies joining this trend, as others notable websites and services including Bitwarden, 1Password, Google, Adobe Creative Cloud, eBay, and Shopify have already embraced passkeys, signaling a potential industry-wide adoption in the near future.
