Syncing issue in Google Drive desktop app results in permanent loss of personal files
Google Drive for Desktop is experiencing a syncing issue that results in the loss of personal files from the cloud service. Google has acknowledged this problem, identifying it as a sync issue affecting versions 84.0.0.0 to 84.0.4.0 of the desktop app. The issue seems to impact a limited number of Google Drive desktop app users, with reports of missing files dating back to May, suggesting that the problem has persisted for several months.
The issue was brought to light by a user who lost data from May and posted about the problem on Google’s community support site. Despite Google's support team's attempts to recover the data, including the backup and restoration of a DriveFS folder, the efforts were unsuccessful. The support thread revealed that lot of users were facing the same problem, with even IT professionals unable to locate the lost files.
In response to the issue, users are advised not to disconnect their account within Google Drive for desktop or delete or move the app data folder, and also to back up the app folder in a separate location as a preventive measure. Google is currently investigating the problem, but has not provided a specific timeline or solution.
Our take: For those looking for alternatives, you can always check out interesting proposals like Proton Drive (still quite new but gaining popularity, backed by the Swiss company Proton AG), Syncthing, ownCloud, or those mentioned by ddnn in the comments: MEGA, Nextcloud, Filen or pCloud
Only thing I'm wondering is why this article on alternativeto.net didn't mention an alternative. I'll do it for the author, I guess.
Mega: MEGA Nextcloud: Nextcloud Filen: Filen pCloud: pCloud
And all the rest: Google Drive
Hey, thanks for sharing your recommendations and feedback! Many times we include some alternatives in the article, but even when they're not mentioned, users can always quickly access the alternative page in the upper right corner. I've added your recommendations and a couple more anyway 😉
