Massively multiplayer online role playing games represent an evolution of the original concept of what role playing games offered in terms of expansive foreign worlds to explore while taking the mantle of an adventurer of any kind. Popularized by the ever relevant World of Warcraft, MMORPGs take what people enjoy about traditional single-player role playing games and allows them to experience that content with other people across the world in real time. In order to accommodate this, the worlds of MMORPGs are oftentimes much more expansive than those found in traditional RPGs, allowing people to lose themselves in fantasy worlds while potentially forging bonds with others. In a way, MMORPGs can be seen as a type of social network.
