Review: VRChat - A Platform with Potential and Challenges
VRChat is currently the most popular social platform in connection with virtual worlds and VR (measured by user numbers). It offers the possibility to create virtual worlds and upload your own avatars, but this does not positively distinguish it from other platforms, as VRChat is primarily based on Unity and requires technical knowledge and familiarity with the Unity game engine for every small adjustment.
This also means that it is not possible to adjust your own avatar within VRChat or to create your own worlds. Everything has to be created, adjusted, and uploaded outside of VRChat using the respective VRChat SDK in Unity and possibly with the help of Blender (or similar 3D editors). Thus, there is no inventory within VRChat and no possibility to spawn items directly in the world or to attach clothing and accessories to the avatar. This naturally limits the creative and design possibilities for the majority of users, as every external change of clothing, gadgets, or tools must be correctly attached to the avatar within Unity and then uploaded.
The VRChat community mainly consists of children and teenagers who are often neglected by their parents and given a headset. As in Horizon World, VRChat is therefore often misused as a daycare, especially in the English-speaking world. Most young adults use the platform to escape reality or to deal with their sexuality. There is also a pronounced and nerdy furry community, which is somewhat more mature, but also nerdier. Besides exploring and having fun in the various virtual worlds, most of VRChat takes place in front of mirrors to look at oneself. It has a bit of a narcissistic touch, but is probably more related to character identity and of course observing how full-body tracking affects their avatar. Otherwise, the world is primarily populated by men, but also some women (rather girls) who are often surrounded by hormone-driven young adults. A real exchange between women is rather rare, as the main focus is on maintaining and nurturing the attention of their own group (harems?).
The majority of the younger community is therefore socially inexperienced and a small part is quite rude due to the anonymity, which is why there are now a variety of ways to mute, hide or completely block other users.
Despite these challenges, VRChat is currently the leading social VR platform in the VR sector. Outside of VR, there is only SecondLife, which is graphically and interactively more versatile and better, but struggles with old technology and performance problems. The strengths of VR-Chat are clearly the ability to have conversations with other people with a virtual self (avatar) and to enjoy the offerings of the various worlds (rather rooms).
However, the platform lacks technical innovation and interactivity. The ability to create and design characters and worlds within VRChat is not possible without advanced technical knowledge. Even Linden Labs' Sansar, in terms of capabilities, graphics, and possibilities, is further along (although largely unknown and due to the small community, increasingly dying).
One problem to consider, however, is that VRChat does not have age control. While virtual worlds like SecondLife properly filter worlds and content through labeling, children and teenagers in VRChat have unregulated access to pornographic and interactive content and avatars. This violates the rules of the developers, but is secretly tolerated by them. Therefore, VRChat is not really recommended for this (primary) target group.
Conclusion: Overall, VRChat is an interesting platform with potential, but also with significant challenges. The technical hurdles and the lack of youth protection are serious problems that need to be addressed. Nevertheless, the platform offers a unique opportunity for immersive social exchange in a virtual environment, which sets it apart from other platforms.
VRChat has some great people and creators from all over the world on their platform... However their developers ignored and actively persecuted the very popular game modifications made by that very same community. For years the community has used mods for everything from quality of life features to supporting disabilities.... and all that time people requested those exact features be added to the base game... AND THEY IGNORED IT. It wasn't until VRChat blocked all mods and they got massive community backlash that they finally got to work fixing some of these long term suggestions. Some might forgive their dev team but I won't, there are still some disabilities that depend on unique and custom hardware and this will never be fully supported by the base game unless they support modifications. Use Chill Out VR instead, the VRC modding community jumped ship for them.
VRchat has great community and i meet lot of friends in this platform.
the weakness is their unreasonable strict policy where as social games or non-competitive games, VRchat dev decided to execute a permanent ban for any usage of external mods where user has no freedom to enhance and customize their vrchat experiences.
You can talk to people
Probably the best VR community game, i love the liberty that we have to create worlds and avatars, and how immense is the possibilities of both.
