Altspace is very streamlined. However, with this, you lose much of the customization that comes with a platform like VRChat. Someone new will like this app, but VRC switchovers will not be happy.

  3. Second Life is an online virtual world, developed and owned by the San Francisco-based firm Linden Lab and launched on June 23, 2003.

    Second Life vs VRChat opinions
Some users think Second Life is a great alternative to VRChat, some don't.

It's not a VR title. The primary function of VRChat is that it is a VR social game. So, whilst VRC does have a "desktop mode". and SL is similar, if not more advanced, in nature to VRC, fundamentally, those seeking out an alternative to VRChat are likely looking for a VR alternative, of which Second Life need not apply.
