It covers nearly all functionality of MSOff, is frequently updated, is extensively compatible. There is one omission: it lacks e-mail client, but it's on purpose, and you can always install Thunderbird :)

Needed powerpoint processor for class. Libre's powerpoint processor didn't allow good note-taking (created giant text box under slide which made the slide itself super small).

xbones LibreOffice gets better with every version. Compatibility with Microsoft Office is quite good with version 7.2 (unless you use complex layout like brochures). I could convert my old WordPerfect documents to LibreOffice easily (WordPerfect has always been better than Word but is too expensive in Europe).

In my opinion WPS gives you the closest thing to MS Office. If you are familiar with MS Office you should be able to use WPS right away. This is the main reason I prefer it to OpenOffice or Libre Office

xbones This office suite provides the best compatibility with Microsoft Office. The lifetime licence is a good investment. You can switch the user interface from menus to ribbons.

dansker13 Apache Open Office is based on the old StarOffice, which 10-15 years ago was way ahead of MS Office - and so is AOO to-day. The other alternative is LibreOffice, which is also based upon the same old platform. Those two are especially efficient for work, but also fill any need a private user can have

124MB download, no invasive services, doesn't spike CPU or HDD I/O, less cluttered GUI, seems to be compatible and efficient. What's not to love?

Between OnlyOffice, FreeOffice, WPS and LibreOffice, the closest i could get to a Microsoft Word document was with OnlyOffice and since i need the best compatibility possible, i liked OnlyOffice.

It does not require DotNet or Java to run. It runs natively on all WIN32 systems. That means it can be installed and run on Windows 95 right up to Windows 10 without any problems. It supports only open document formats, like the Rich Text format (*.RTF), that can be opened by any office suite on any operating system without any formatting errors. It is a very small download and install and also does not use any resources from the system.
