It covers nearly all functionality of MSOff, is frequently updated, is extensively compatible. There is one omission: it lacks e-mail client, but it's on purpose, and you can always install Thunderbird :)

Needed powerpoint processor for class. Libre's powerpoint processor didn't allow good note-taking (created giant text box under slide which made the slide itself super small).

xbones LibreOffice gets better with every version. Compatibility with Microsoft Office is quite good with version 7.2 (unless you use complex layout like brochures). I could convert my old WordPerfect documents to LibreOffice easily (WordPerfect has always been better than Word but is too expensive in Europe).

it's ugly, the buttons are in the wrong places (and i still love wordperfect!!) clunky, not truly compatible with industry standard MS office. selection is awkward, the UI is not userfrienldy. and the support staff are not interested in fixing it. the 'themes' rely on firefox extension and haven't worked in the last two versions. i went back to windows just for office.

dansker13 Apache Open Office is based on the old StarOffice, which 10-15 years ago was way ahead of MS Office - and so is AOO to-day. The other alternative is LibreOffice, which is also based upon the same old platform. Those two are especially efficient for work, but also fill any need a private user can have

124MB download, no invasive services, doesn't spike CPU or HDD I/O, less cluttered GUI, seems to be compatible and efficient. What's not to love?

forgionealberico Clean modern interface, more compatible with MSOffice than Libre or Open, but heavier to run on slow hardware probably

Between OnlyOffice, FreeOffice, WPS and LibreOffice, the closest i could get to a Microsoft Word document was with OnlyOffice and since i need the best compatibility possible, i liked OnlyOffice.
