Does most things you'd want MS office to do, however, some formatting options aren't available in office files (.docx, .pptx, .xlsx etc). If your main focus is using these files, this is probably not for you, but for anyone else, it is perfect.

Apache Open Office is based on the old StarOffice, which 10-15 years ago was way ahead of MS Office - and so is AOO to-day. The other alternative is LibreOffice, which is also based upon the same old platform. Those two are especially efficient for work, but also fill any need a private user can have
