You should have full control over your data. We help you achieve that: a safe home for all your data. Secure, under your control and developed in an open, transparent and trustworthy way. We are Nextcloud.
Nextcloud vs Google Photos opinions
Nextcloud has a photos function that competes with Google Photos and can offer the following functionality that Google Photos has:
- Automatic syncing from your phone
- Albums (including sharing via link)
- Tagging
- Showing your photos on a map
- Still in early development: Face recognition
da_It can even handle raw photos, if the appropriate app is installed.
lastzeroJust like Google Drive, Nextcloud is not a real alternative to Google Photos.
BarnMTBWith Nextcloud, you have to install and maintain the service/server yourself or pay a 3rd party host to do it for you. This requires some technical knowledge, willingness, and some investment upfront. Nextcloud is not "register an account & go", unlike Google Photos.
Not really a photo management app.
CrowfatherMore of an alternative to Google Drive then of Google Photos. Its a lot like One Drive where it store photos and has a way to show photos but does not have all the the photos features that Google Photos has.
Nextxloud is great for file sharing and syncing but the photo management functionality is pretty limited. Its more a Google Drive alternative than a Google Photos one.

OneDrive (formerly known as SkyDrive) delivers a satisfactory online file storage and sharing solution in a free and easy to use service. It has a design that is both attractive and functional.
Microsoft OneDrive vs Google Photos opinions
PietrosmusIt is good to store and manage cloud files, but it isn't made for pictures.
BarnMTBWhile OneDrive now has some rudimentary Photos feature, it is not enough to be a Google Photos alternative. Photos features are half-baked. For example, did you know you can search by objects in the photo in OneDrive? While it's not as good, it can do that. But the feature isn't promoted anywhere. Shows how much they care.

Simple Gallery is a highly customizable offline gallery. Organize & edit your photos, recover deleted files with the recycle bin, protect & hide files and view a huge variety of different photo & video formats including RAW, SVG and much more.
Simple Gallery vs Google Photos opinions
CrowfatherSingle device and offline only. More of a photos gallery than a photos storage app.
PietrosmusIt has nothing to do with cloud-storing photos.
Unfortunately Simple Gallery does not feature sync between devices
Main selling point of Google Photos is its cloud sync and storage, which Simply Gallery does not feature.
cb1dGreat photo app for Android. Has no Photo Cloud Storage features like Google Photos which make it not the same alternate.

Online social photo and short video sharing community. Flickr helps you organize that huge mass of photos you have and offers a way for you, your friends and family to tell stories about them.
Flickr vs Google Photos opinions
It's not really a cloud storage for photos
Flickr is more of a social platform for sharing photos. Google Photos is more of a cloud file management platform focused on photos.
Flickr isn't a photo-storage app but more a social network for photographers.

Piwigo is a photo gallery software for the web that comes with powerful features to publish and manage your collection of pictures.
Piwigo vs Google Photos opinions
CrowfatherPiwigo is good but its really for photos only. Video support requires the complex process of adding and configuring a special plugin. It also lacks object tagging and image recognition.
Piwigo has come a long way since I first tried it. It’s great alternative method of storing photos in a cloud. It it is open source and can be self hosted. However, if you are not capable of managing your own LAMP stack, it appears you can get a hosted service at piwigo.com

Ente is a simple app to automatically backup and organize your photos and videos.
ente vs Google Photos opinions
PietrosmusI prefer ente to google photos as it provides end-to-end encryption to your photos, meaning you are the only able to see them, not even ente can decrypt them. The application is open source and ente's infrastructure whitepaper is publicly available. It has a smooth good-looking and simple app interface (android/ios/web), the prices are reasonable and the support is litterally just so fast. Recommended, as they also offer one year with 1GB of free trial.

SonaVerdyanIts secure, encrypted, no one can see and track your media. Also easy to use and share photos with friends
Aves can handle all sorts of images and videos, including your typical JPEGs and MP4s, but also more exotic things like multi-page TIFFs, SVGs, old AVIs and more!
