It is the best Google photos alternative I know. It even has pretty good AI-features, which work completely offline (of course you'll need an internet connection to sync your photos). It looks very good and makes me feel like my photos are stored in a safe place.

It's simple enough for the average Google Photos user, who doesn't know how to self-host a server or do any technical configurations. Just install, transfer photos, and all your photos are backed up and available any time!

I really like where Ente is going. It's end-to-end encrypted but provides full cross-platform syncing. It has pretty good on-device machine learning. It looks and feel great. I'm really excited to see where it goes from here; it seems like it's shaping up to be the best photos platform yet.

With Nextcloud, you have to install and maintain the service/server yourself or pay a 3rd party host to do it for you. This requires some technical knowledge, willingness, and some investment upfront. Nextcloud is not "register an account & go", unlike Google Photos.

It's useless without setting up a server. I am NOT looking for a backup system i already have a backup system. I want a photo manager and this is not the same thing.

VERY easy to self-host with Docker. Just phone and Immich in the same internet and media will automatically back up. No more paying Google for more storage space.

Great alternative for almost all the on-device / offline use cases. (If you do want to sync to a cloud account, you'll need another app for sync, but can still use this one locally.)

I had Google photos as default with sync turned off it kept on turning on. Thanks to this app I don't have to worry about that. I needed an app to act as a basic gallery app this does that no problem.

One of the best alternatives for the offline capabilities of Google Photos (gallery, view, edit). Needs to be complemented with another app for cloud save / backup use-case.

Piwigo is good but its really for photos only. Video support requires the complex process of adding and configuring a special plugin. It also lacks object tagging and image recognition.

Piwigo has come a long way since I first tried it. It’s great alternative method of storing photos in a cloud. It it is open source and can be self hosted. However, if you are not capable of managing your own LAMP stack, it appears you can get a hosted service at piwigo.com
