It is the best Google photos alternative I know. It even has pretty good AI-features, which work completely offline (of course you'll need an internet connection to sync your photos). It looks very good and makes me feel like my photos are stored in a safe place.

It's simple enough for the average Google Photos user, who doesn't know how to self-host a server or do any technical configurations. Just install, transfer photos, and all your photos are backed up and available any time!

I prefer ente to google photos as it provides end-to-end encryption to your photos, meaning you are the only able to see them, not even ente can decrypt them. The application is open source and ente's infrastructure whitepaper is publicly available. It has a smooth good-looking and simple app interface (android/ios/web), the prices are reasonable and the support is litterally just so fast. Recommended, as they also offer one year with 1GB of free trial.

It can even handle raw photos, if the appropriate app is installed.

With Nextcloud, you have to install and maintain the service/server yourself or pay a 3rd party host to do it for you. This requires some technical knowledge, willingness, and some investment upfront. Nextcloud is not "register an account & go", unlike Google Photos.

It's useless without setting up a server. I am NOT looking for a backup system i already have a backup system. I want a photo manager and this is not the same thing.

VERY easy to self-host with Docker. Just phone and Immich in the same internet and media will automatically back up. No more paying Google for more storage space.

PhotoPrism is a highly rated alternative to Google Photos that has been gaining popularity among users who are looking for a more private and decentralized way to manage their photos. PhotoPrism is an AI-powered photo app that uses the latest technologies to automatically tag and find pictures without getting in your way. Whether you choose to run it at home, on a private server, or in the cloud, PhotoPrism makes it easy to organize and access your photos from anywhere.

One of the standout features of PhotoPrism is its automatic tagging, which can help you quickly find the photos you're looking for based on keywords and other metadata. The app also offers facial recognition and geocoding, making it easy to sort and filter your photos by location and the people in them. While Google Photos offers similar features like facial recognition and image sharing, PhotoPrism's focus on privacy and decentralization makes it an excellent alternative for users who are concerned about the security of their data.

Comes with almost all functionality Google Photos provides such as: Automatic tagging of objects, places, colors, faces (coming soon). Creating and sharing albums. Video support. Beautiful views...

Additionally PhotoPrism respects the users privacy!

Piwigo is good but its really for photos only. Video support requires the complex process of adding and configuring a special plugin. It also lacks object tagging and image recognition.

Piwigo has come a long way since I first tried it. It’s great alternative method of storing photos in a cloud. It it is open source and can be self hosted. However, if you are not capable of managing your own LAMP stack, it appears you can get a hosted service at piwigo.com
