Windows 11 is getting several new AI features to core apps and Copilot Vision on desktop

Microsoft is introducing a wide range of new AI capabilities to Windows 11 version 24H2 through update KB5062660, reaching the stable channel for general users. This includes enhancements across core apps like Settings, Photos, Paint, and Snipping Tool, expanding existing AI features and introducing new ones, though most are limited to Copilot+ PCs.

Copilot Vision is the exception, launching on all Windows 11 PCs in the US. While it was initially limited to Microsoft Edge, it was expanded a few weeks ago to support any desktop app, allowing real-time, on-screen assistance by sharing your screen with the AI. The feature doesn’t require a Copilot Pro subscription, as long as the system language is set to English (US). Meanwhile, Copilot+ PCs with Snapdragon chips receive an AI assistant in Windows Settings for adjusting preferences using natural language input, along with new Click to Do actions such as “Draft with Copilot” in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Teams shortcuts, Reading Coach practice, and Immersive Reader integration.

Other Copilot+ features include Relight in Microsoft Photos, AI sticker generation and smart selection in Microsoft Paint, and a “Perfect screenshot” tool in Snipping Tool for smart framing, along with a new color picker. Quick Machine Recovery is also being introduced to all Windows 11 PCs to resolve boot failures online. Several of these features were originally introduced back in May and are now rolling out gradually. It may take up to a month for them to reach all users, but early access is available by enabling the latest updates and installing KB5062660.

"With quick machine recovery, when a widespread outage affects devices from starting properly, Microsoft can broadly deploy targeted remediations to affected devices..." People that used one Microsoft support and forums hopping to find a solution for their computer already know too well how Microsoft is very incapable at fixing its own OS. "...automating fixes and quickly getting users to a productive state without requiring complex manual intervention." Is this "automating", supposed to better than "complex manual intervention", the same as "AI" that one day will be better than "skilled experienced technician"? Because it's still a running joke.
