Microsoft Defender adds unsecure Wi-Fi detection and expands VPN to more countries
Microsoft Defender for individuals has expanded its functionality to include unsecure Wi-Fi detection on Android, iOS, and Windows platforms, with macOS support expected soon. This new feature alerts users to weak Wi-Fi encryption and offers a one-click option to disconnect from the network. Future updates aim to automatically enable a VPN when connecting to public Wi-Fi.
Initially launched in 2023, Microsoft Defender's privacy protection features were extended earlier this year to the UK for iOS and Android users. The Defender VPN service is currently available in the US, UK, Germany, and Canada, with plans to expand to 10 additional countries across Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The VPN service encrypts internet traffic and masks IP addresses, ensuring secure and anonymous browsing experiences.
Users are provided with a 50GB monthly data limit for secure browsing via the VPN, although certain streaming and social media platforms like YouTube, Netflix, TikTok, Disney+, Prime Video, Facebook Video, Instagram, Snapchat, and WhatsApp are excluded to maintain performance. The Microsoft Defender app is available for download from the Google Play Store, Apple App Store, and Microsoft Store, requiring a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription linked to a Microsoft account.
