Microsoft is phasing out the built-in VPN from its 365 subscription due to low usage
Microsoft has announced the removal of the free VPN feature from its Microsoft 365 subscription, effective February 28th. This VPN, integrated into the Microsoft Defender app, was intended to encrypt internet traffic and hide IP addresses. Low usage of the VPN is cited as a key factor in its removal.
The VPN had a 50GB monthly data cap and automatic regional connections, making it unsuitable for bypassing geo-restrictions. Microsoft 365 subscribers in the US will retain access to identity theft protection and credit monitoring, but VPN support will be discontinued. This change follows the first subscription price increase in 12 years, raising Personal and Family plans by $3 per month, coinciding with the introduction of Microsoft 365 Copilot, which integrates AI features from Microsoft Copilot into Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel.
The removal of the VPN may disappoint users who relied on it for privacy. With no built-in alternative, they'll have to turn to third-party services—luckily, we at AlternativeTo have plenty of options.
I see how it is. Need some security while using public internet; no soup for you!
Who in their right mind would trust M$ with their security and privacy anyhow?
