Linux Mint 22 'Wilma' released: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS base, Cinnamon 6.2, and enhanced features
Linux Mint 22, codenamed "Wilma," has been released as the latest stable version of the Ubuntu-based operating system. This version is built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat) and runs on Linux kernel 6.8, ensuring security updates until 2029. The release features three desktop environments: Cinnamon 6.2, Xfce 4.18, and MATE 1.26, with Cinnamon defaulting to X11 and offering an experimental Wayland session.
Key updates in this release include PipeWire as the default sound server and support for the new Debian DEB822 format. Enhanced theming with GTK4 and improved HiDPI support during boot are notable additions. Language support has been upgraded, and system artwork has received various updates. The system now includes FAT32 support in File System Transposition mode. Mozilla Thunderbird is available as a native DEB package, and GNOME Online Accounts have been integrated as a GTK-independent XApp, alongside a preinstalled Web App Matrix for connecting to the Matrix chat network.
Additional enhancements include Pix image viewer's support for JXL (JPEG-XL) images and Timeshift's new confirmation dialog for deleting snapshots. Sticky Notes now allows default position configurations for new notes, and the Xed text editor supports duplicating selected text. Unverified Flatpak apps are disabled by default in the Software Manager, which also features improved multi-threading, a new preferences page, a banner slideshow, and faster loading times. New packages like xapp-thumbnailer-gimp for GIMP file thumbnails and xfce4-xapp-status-plugin, an updated tray applet, are also included.
