Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Noble Numbat now available: Featuring GNOME 46 and Linux kernel 6.8
The latest version of the popular GNU/Linux distribution, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (Noble Numbat), is now available. This version is based on Linux kernel 6.8 and comes with significant updates and features. The default desktop environment is GNOME 46, featuring an updated GNOME Files manager (formerly Nautilus) and a new global search feature.
The installation process for the LTS version has been updated, with both Desktop and Server Editions using the same installer. Desktop users will get a minimal install by default, with the option to add more applications like LibreOffice and GNOME. GNOME 46 also brings updates to the Settings app and introduces expandable notifications for a better desktop experience, while the Linux kernel 6.8 brings improved support for Intel Meteor Lake processors and enhanced WiFi performance for AMD Ryzen 7000 and 8000 mobile chips. Ubuntu 24.04 LTS also includes new encryption options such as ZFS encryption support and offers better guidance for dual-boot setups, especially those involving BitLocker. There's also official support for the Raspberry Pi 5.
Canonical guarantees Long Term Support (LTS) for at least five years, with Ubuntu Pro customers having the option for up to 12 years of extended support. LTS releases, including Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, are rolled out every two years, marking a major upgrade from the 2022-released Ubuntu 22.04. There're also a lot of Official flavors available for download now, including Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu Unity, Ubuntu Studio, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Cinnamon, Ubuntu MATE, Edubuntu, and Ubuntu Kylin.
Snaps led me to migrate from Ubuntu to other distros like Mint, Fedora & Debian. Hope Canonical recognizes this & flatpaks should be developed, enforced & promoted instead of snaps...
