williammarkrockUpvoted a comment on Element as an alternative to Zoom
Element is one app that communicates over the Matrix protocol. You can use it via the Tor-Browser, so its as private as possible. But for Matrix there are tons of other apps for all operating systems. As an Alternative to Zoom, its not just for Videocalls, but a replacement for Discord and Telegram (features) or Signal and Whatsapp (End to End encrypted Chats), while not tracking you, being open source, self-hostable and by that decentralized.williammarkrockdoesn't think Discord is an alternative to Zoom
Discord is better for large communities and informal video calls, not meetings.- 839596added Web Conferencing as a feature to Zoom83
Terrible OAuth implementation... sometimes exposing you to phishing, but wow did they put a lot of work into their platform. They have Fedora RPMs, Debian .deb's, a chrome app, a web client, android and iOS apps... it's truly impressive how complete their lineup is.
Free videochat without the bloatware that Skype has become. I'm not even in the target audience but it covers my needs perfectly.
This is less secure than Facebook.

According to several experts, Zoom has major security vulnerabilities. (https://protonmail.com/blog/zoom-privacy-issues/) Zoom allows your boss to track your attention during calls, shares the copious amounts of data it collects with third parties, and has already had a major security vulnerability. Zoom does not use end-to-end encryption, but only uses transport layer security (TLS) encryption. And online trolls have also taken advantage of default Zoom settings to “Zoombomb,” public conference calls and disrupt them. Also (https://gbhackers.com/zoom-vulnerability/)
With the last updates your mouse pointer becomes laggy.
I like Zoom because it helped me a lot to stay in touch with other students and professors without having to meet them in person!
Zoom is just horrible. There are two awesome Open source alternatives that run on many servers and protect your privacy... And there is Zoom.
You literally give some dubious newcomer tech giant in the US the rights to record your face, apply background filters (i.e. run AI over the video) and more. You have no idea what they do with your data, as it is on their servers, you have no control.
AAAnd they watermark every stupid recording with their logo.
Use BigBlueButton or Jitsi, trust me.
Awful software with lack of security and internet acceleration. I have experienced several times being trolled in a Zoom class by some stupid hacker kids, while the incident hasn't happened a single time in Google Meet or Microsoft Teams. I don't understand why many businesses and universities still stick to this software. If I got a chance, I would suggest people replace Zoom to other open source alternatives.
