Privacy-Respecting Apps and Services (Computers)
Choose freedom and continued democracy by switching away from big tech in your personal digital lives.
Not all apps and services listed will be open source or even free (as in free beer), but they will at the very least be privacy-respecting.
Of course, there will be a few exceptions, simply because they are necessary for some people, like for work.
BUT, THEY ARE NOT NECESSARY FOR YOUR PERSONAL LIFE. Work-life balance is important.
This list will get updated from time to time.
Each section lists my recommendations in order of best (in my opinion) to good enough. Except for the Docs and OS sections, which are listed from easiest for beginners to better for creatives, techies, and professionals. These and the Video Conferencing section, which is listed based on needed for work to good enough for personal use.
Lastly, the Linux operating systems (or distros) are at the end of the list because no matter which you choose, the majority of these apps can be installed on Windows, and can certainly be installed on any of the distros.

Terrible OAuth implementation... sometimes exposing you to phishing, but wow did they put a lot of work into their platform. They have Fedora RPMs, Debian .deb's, a chrome app, a web client, android and iOS apps... it's truly impressive how complete their lineup is.
According to several experts, Zoom has major security vulnerabilities. (https://protonmail.com/blog/zoom-privacy-issues/) Zoom allows your boss to track your attention during calls, shares the copious amounts of data it collects with third parties, and has already had a major security vulnerability. Zoom does not use end-to-end encryption, but only uses transport layer security (TLS) encryption. Doesn't work well on Ubuntu. Kept freezing and crashing during video calls and video quality was garbage on a good internet connection too. It also keeps trying to get you to buy a subscription so that you can have conferences longer than 40 minutes, and has AI shoved in like everything else does these days (I do wonder if the AI integration is part of why it's so bad on Ubuntu, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about that to say one way or the other)
It performs well even on weaker connections and offers useful features like recording, breakout rooms, and virtual backgrounds.
Cons: Free plan has time limits for group meetings, and heavy usage can require a paid upgrade.
Verdict: A dependable and widely adopted solution for online meetings and collaboration, especially for teams and remote work.
