Self-Hosted Twitter Alternatives

Twitter is not available as a self-hosted solution but there are plenty of alternatives for power users and business that want to host a solution on-premise. The best Self-Hosted alternative is Mastodon, which is both free and Open Source. If that doesn't suit you, our users have ranked more than 100 alternatives to Twitter and many of them are available as a self-hosted solution so hopefully you can find a suitable replacement. Other interesting Self-Hosted alternatives to Twitter are Diaspora, Pixelfed, GNU social and Pleroma.

Twitter alternatives are mainly Social Networks but may also be Microblogs or Encrypted Chat Apps. Filter by these if you want a narrower list of alternatives or looking for a specific functionality of Twitter.

A better version of what Gab was trying to do. Federation is built into its core, so communities of users can be created, but the Fediverse has you covered. Everyone is linked together so long as they don't break the rules. No censorship, good content, and nice people. Great alternative!

It's very much like Twitter with a character limit of 500, except there's not one website you have to trust, but you can choose the mastodon server ("instance") that you trust and they are linked, so you can follow people from other instances. The instances all have their own rules, so you can pick a place with as few or many rules as you are comfortable with.

Mastodon is similar in a lot of ways, but different in a very important one: people or small groups of people can have their own server. These server then connect to each other in much the same way that email does. Everyone can talk, but you really own your own data.

Diaspora is a network, not a single service. You can run your own service ("pod"), and still follow users from other pods in the network, and like and comment on their posts.

What Misskey has that others don't is the fully customized dashboards for each instance and the ability to play games and integrate other APIs into your application.
