What is Schnauz?

Schnauz is a file manager for macOS, built in Rust with GPUI. It combines files, terminal, and tasks into one workspace. It remembers each project's settings including favorite folders, pinned files, tabs, and layout. It also allows switching between projects without reconfiguring the workspace.

The file manager also features an interactive terminal that can track directory changes. When a command-line tool is running, the browsing session remains undisturbed. It supports SSH terminals with one-way directory following.

Users can paste a folder or file path to open or reveal it. It also integrates with Todoist to manage tasks related to the project. Other features include file and text search, resizable previews, list and icon views, cloud and network location badges, and optional Nextcloud sharing. It also provides on-demand disk usage visualization and drive capacity indicators.

Schnauz does not use Electron runtime for rendering. It initiates searches and storage scans on demand and does not index the home folder or calculate folder sizes. It works with macOS 14 or later and can be downloaded from GitHub. Todoist and Nextcloud integrations are optional.
