Comment summary: Double Commander is praised for its functionality and being a free, cross-platform alternative to Total Commander. Users appreciate its plugin support, multi-pane view, and customizability. However, some find it visually unappealing, particularly on macOS, and cite performance issues such as UI sluggishness and difficulty with high DPI. While advanced features are beneficial, the complexity may deter casual users, desiring ease akin to Windows Explorer's interface.

Switched from Total Commander to FreeCommander to Double Commander. If you worked with either one of these, you'll be instantly familiar with Double Commander.

For me, it's a must have tool. Cannot work without it. Explorer doesn't come even close to functionality offered by these file manager tools.

A good dual-pane file manager, a bit slow I agree, but it has nice file comparison and advanced search features.

I can see the appeal, but, for casual users, Double Commander is incredibly complicated to navigate. A great project, but not for me.

Today's accessibility demands that we focus on ease of use, and Double Commander is a file manager that meets all of our needs. It makes basic file management concise, easy, and fast using the keyboard. You can easily use the arrow keys and a single F-function key to accomplish all basic file management tasks, even if you don't need more than one combination. And with the flexibility of plugins, you can extend the personalization of Double Commander even further. And it's still free and open source.
