Preview is one of the best things about OS X. Every OS needs a decent PDF reader and image viewer (not necessarily together), and this is better than all of the alternatives. If only Windows had an equivalent...
Baked into MacOS, it's really easy, accessible, supports many image formats and pdf. Has basic editing features for pdf and image files. It's also very light-weight.
For basic cropping and whatnot, Preview is a surprisingly capable image editor. At least, it makes MS Paint look embarrassing.
I used to open Photoshop just to resize or crop an image, but then I realized Preview could do it. Go to Tools->Adjust Colour... and you'll find it can do many of the basic image filters that Photoshop can do. You'll never even need Adobe Reader, because Preview opens PDFs, and does it much faster.
Preview is simply beautiful!! It is so simple and just works as expected for viewing, light formatting and annotations! On top of that it supports a bunch of file-formats including RAW, even microsoft documents formats and lets you edit and sign PDF-files. I absolutely love it!
One downside is that I can't flick through my pictures easily in preview, but really my only complaint!
