See this thread on what directoryOpus is
Basically, use PDF-x-change as your .pdf default app protocol.
Then you can use it to get image previews of your PDFs inside directoryOpus
Very useful if you do a lot of PDF based work and need to preview thumbnails of your PDFs quickly
Plus adobe reader is generally the only other alternative here for PDF thumbnail preview.... and there monetizing everything / extremely invasive

PDF-XChange Viewer remains my go-to PDF handler for Windows, despite the push towards the Editor product. While Editor does add some feature niceties, my experience has been that Viewer is more responsive and handles 99% of my PDF requirements, including very large PDFs (eg. architectural specification documents, architectural/engineering drawings, legal documents). The only notable feature I miss in Viewer is multi-selecting markup. Editor may have improved since my last testing, which was not recent.
The free unlicensed version is very feature-rich, and licensed features are fully enabled but add a watermark (with a notification and acceptance dialog). This model makes it easy to evaluate the licensed features, which I would -not- recommend; instead, upgrade to Editor for those.
Some of the more surprising features are the measurement tools, which allow for scaled take-off and ad-hoc scaling (eg, scaling to a non-standard or resized scale indicator). This makes it exceptionally useful as a default viewer in architectural, engineering, or estimation contexts.
Easy to use. Powerful in managing PDF file. Less expensive than acrobat reader dc. lots of features. Great for teacher like me. I also got academic discount which is 50% off on all products which is good. Great for students and teacher alike.
Really love it. In the past year(s) both Foxit and Adobe (Adobe a looong time ago) started being laggy and buggy. I appreciate the way how PDF X Change loads very quickly, both the document but also the comment panel, search results and so on.
Its a lightweight and portable.
It is the only program I am aware of that allow you to search through folders of PDF files for a specific text occurrence. When you have huge folders of PDFs and need the one that has a name or address or whatever in it. A little slow but a lot quicker than manually loading and searching each file.
Foxit Reader does it, too.

For searches through the content of many kinds (not only PDF) of different files, FileLocator is a lifesaver: FileLocator

its amazing, I scrapped the master pdf editor, becuase it took so long to open anything and it would not let me preview the file.
