Libre Hardware Monitor is a fork of discontinued Open Hardware Monitor, and practically just like its predecessor, with updates for recognizing today's hardware. I built a new PC and tried several alternatives which left me unsatisfied, until I found Libre which worked exactly like Open Hardware Monitor in my soon-to-retire 6 years old PC. Problem solved!

It can put info like temperature, cpu speed cpu load ram used in the notification area, with different colours for Ok and hot, whereas open hardware monitor needs the window open to see what is happening. On the plus side though open hardware monitor also includes the graphics card, so I'm using it until I know my silent graphics card is ok
