Hardcore app. But it's like windows trademark. It's useful for a lot of simple tasks whitch require quick editor.

Except mspaint.exe, the only decent application included with Wind(bl)ows nowadays.

Line endings do not work properly. Opening documents with standard formatting from other platforms will cause bugs. Terrible app.

What is Notepad?

Fastest and lightweight simple text editor bundled with all Windows OS. Just plain text, saves in .txt format. So it has been used by people for long time Since 1980s. Features improved especially since 2018.

Features:

  • Cut / Copy / Paste / Undo (Gradual Undo in Win11)
  • Search string
  • Replace string
  • Go to line (Win 2000 later)
  • Insert Time/Date (Also, files whose first line is .LOG will have a timestamp inserted at the end of the file when opened)
  • Word Wrap
  • Change font
  • Show Status bar (Win XP later)
  • Search with Bing (Win 10 later)
  • Zoom Text (Win 10 version 1809)
  • Dark mode (Win 11)
  • Multi-language, Support for more than 100 languages

File support: Support for Linux newline codes, and improved loading of huge files in 2018. Saved by UTF-8 From Windows 10 version 1903 in 2019.

Notepad's predecessor was Multi-Tool Notepad, a mouse-based text editor by Microsoft in 1983. Notepad was bundled with Windows (Vesion 1.0) in 1985.
