FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping software written in Java. The recent development has hopefully turned it into high productivity tool. We are proud that the operation and navigation of FreeMind is faster than that of MindManager because of one-click "fold / unfold" and "follow link" operations.

If you want to keep using the FreeMind codebase I'd recommend sticking with the Freeplane fork rather than FreeMind.
They're taking care of the .mm community quite well so far.
Not sure, but may be abandonware.
Hasn't been updated since 2016 (unstable), and last stable version was 2014.
I think Freeplane is a much more up-to-date fork.

Been using it for almost a decade. On Windows 10 it has some bugs. The last stable version was written in 2014 (see sourceforge )
You should be fine if running it under Windows 7
It is a really very useful and simple application for making mind maps and plans.
I don't believe this project has been discontinued. Latest update is 2019-12-11.
