What is XMind?
XMind is a brainstorming and mind mapping application. It provides a rich set of different visualization styles, and allows sharing of created mind maps via their website. The application is available as an Open Source version and as a paid commercial 'Pro' version. XMind Pro offers extended features like Gantt charts, a presentation mode, export features (PDF, Office, MindManager and Freemind), audio notes, a merge feature, privately online sharing, and more. The Open Source version is otherwise a very functional and powerful 'Mind Managing' software.
For a feature comparison see: http://www.xmind.net/pro/features/
Every package now contains 7 language packs, English English, German German, French French, Spanish Spanish, Japanese Japanese, Chinese(Simplified) Chinese(Simplified), and Chinese(Traditional) Chinese(Traditional). XMind will choose language automatically to fit your OS's settings.

Been using this program for over 5 years and it is a good alternative for Microsoft Visio. Although it does not have all Visio's features, but I do not need them for the task that I perform.
I don't think this application is designed to replace visio. Visio is a diagrammer whereas this is a mind mapper.

Agree :) However it has diagram, project planning and other nice features, which are similar to Visio.

Pay close to 100 USD to be able to search the mind maps? There are better free and open source alternatives that offer search without paying a dime: Freeplane, Freemind, etc.
It can't open .mm files
XMind has in my opinion gone from fast/lightweight, to clunky and slow over the years. I also feel they degraded the user interface, making used features more hidden, and allocating much screen space to buttons leading to 'premium'- and rarely used features. I now run version 3.1.1, which has the old clean UI and seems to be the last version prior to memory usage skyrocketing.
Over the years I have tried to find alternatives, but the visual map-aesthetics of competitors don't sit well with me, possibly because I used XMind for so many years.
but with current 1 file many map, it's a rubbish.
Very useful software, use it continuesly to summarise non-fiction books. Has several themes to create mindmaps
Great Mindmapping software. What I most like about it is that I can create mindmaps very quickly by using only the keyboard, withouth having to switch to the mouse all the time. the auto-layout feature works well, as does the presentation mode. And the standard theme for mindmaps also looks very nice. Stephen, the developer (I believe), is very responsive in the user forum, which is quite active.
