What is Folder Hub?

Folder Hub is an app hidden under the MacBook's notch, used for quick access and retrieval of files and folders within the working directory.

What problems does Folder Hub solve?

  • In daily work, we often deal with numerous files and folders, typically organizing them into different directories for various projects. However, accessing specific project files often involves navigating through layers of nested folders.
  • Accidentally closing a folder window means having to go through the entire folder structure again to locate the desired file.
  • Even when the window is open, accessing the required files can be difficult due to other active windows, such as a web browser, obscuring the view.

How does Folder Hub address these issues (interaction design)?

The Folder Hub window is by default concealed under the MacBook's notch. When the mouse moves to the notch area, the Folder Hub window becomes visible, and upon moving the mouse out of the window, Folder Hub hides again.

When displayed, Folder Hub showcases different workspaces such as Desktop, Downloads, Project A, Project B, all of which are user-customizable and contain the respective project's files and folders. Switching between different workspaces is achieved by hovering the mouse over the respective area.

Taking image uploads as an example: Suppose we need to upload images from "Project A" to a browser window. By moving the mouse to the notch area and then hovering over the "Project A" workspace, we can directly drag and drop the images from this workspace to the browser.

Through this simple example, the following can be observed:

  • No need to navigate through nested folders

  • Folder Hub floats above all other windows, ensuring it is not obscured by the current active window

  • When needing to access it again, Folder Hub remains in the last selected workspace, avoiding the inconvenience of having to find the previously closed Finder window.
