What is Traydex?

Traydex is a drop shelf for Windows that opens as soon as you start dragging something. Drop files, folders, images, text or links on it to keep them for later, then drag them out into any folder or app, one by one or all at once.

Dropping on an action tile processes files right away instead:

  • Compress photos, convert to JPEG/PNG, join images and text into a PDF
  • Pack into ZIP or extract ZIP, 7z, RAR and other archives
  • Recognize text from screenshots, photos and scanned PDFs (offline, using the OCR built into Windows)
  • Rename by rules, compute SHA-256/MD5 with an optional VirusTotal check
  • Upload to Imgur or your own server, show a QR code, send files to your phone over Wi-Fi
  • Convert video to GIF, download videos by link, pass files to any program or script
  • Write your own tiles as plugins in PowerShell, Python, .bat or any .exe

Other features:

  • Quick preview of images, text, code, PDF, Office files and archives (Space or double-click)
  • Notes that save as you type, and search that tolerates typos and the wrong keyboard layout
  • Watched folders such as Downloads appear on the shelf automatically
  • Opens on drag, with a hot corner, a hotkey (Ctrl+Shift+Space) or from the tray; optionally only when you shake the cursor
  • List or grid view, light and dark themes, transparency and blur, interface scale
  • Available in English, Russian, Chinese, Hindi, Spanish and French

Traydex is native: written in Rust on GPUI, the UI framework of the Zed editor, with no Electron or web engine. It's a single executable available as an installer or a portable version for x64, x86 and ARM64. Free and open source (MIT), with no accounts, ads or telemetry; it goes online only for the tiles that need it and to check for updates, which can be turned off.

Requires Windows 10 (1803 or newer) or Windows 11. Currently in alpha.
