Diaspora is a federated social networking service, designed to be a more privacy-aware alternative to Facebook . Share what you want, with whom you want.
Diaspora vs Facebook opinions
Diaspora's key advantage is that it's based on open source software that multiple servers can run. It does not put your private information, your likes, your contacts and your photos in the hands of one corporation who then use it to increase their own private profits by selling your privacy. Diaspora is much smaller though. The UI feels more like Google Plus than Facebook.
So many possibilities are available. Respectful. Nice and clear. Can be self-hosted.
group/collaboration function is absent. not a developer, so im sure i do not understand the difficulties in making this happen. but im pretty sure this is the nr 1 reason diaspora is NOT an fb alternative.
I have less privacy concerns with Diaspora than I have when using FB
Decentralized federated social networks are the only hope for a future internet where discussion is free and private. I doubt most people will use Diaspora or Mastodon, but hopefully the more privacy-conscious of us will help it grow and keep it alive.
Security focused, privacy, open, and without censorship
more privacy-aware, self controll OSS not so dangerus for democracy
Mastodon is a Free and Open Source federated social network, made with a focus on more personal interaction.
Mastodon vs Facebook opinions
free(freedom,ad-free,privacy), decentralized, open source... what more do you want
Mastodon is decentralized and open to all kinds of people. It is closer to Twitter than it is to Facebook. It doesn't seem to attract the alt right like other Facebook alternatives do. I love the interface. It is very well structured and even though you join up for only one instance, you can interact with the whole world!
Mastodon is more an alternative to Twitter than Facebook
Mastodon is more like Twitter.
Non-commercial, allows me to curate a following
It's is decentralized, without owners, free to post whatever you like and to block whatever you dislike.
Has only a tiny fraction of the functionality Facebook has.
Gab Social is an open source and fully decentralized social network powered by the Gab Platform. It is the new social network of Gab.com. This change was made to further Gab's commitment to its users trust and privacy online.
Gab is less moderated compared to other social networks and could be offensive to some people
Gab vs Facebook opinions
Free speech. No censoring. Say what you want, mute anyone that you don't like. GabTV so you can live broadcast. Free.
No censorship, free, no data harvesting, few bots, friendly and helpful community.
Not a replacement for Facebook. Gab is a Twitter clone. I need something Facebook-ish. Twitter is a bad and confusing format for me personally. Gab being a Twitter clone doesn't fit as a FB alternative.
Great communities. Free speech. Ability to mute other users.
Freedom of SPEACH, for everyone !
I value free speech, not censorship!!
It has free registration, decentralized, Fediverse-compatible.
GNU social is a continuation of the StatusNet project. It is social communication software for both public and private communications. It is widely supported and has a large userbase.

Hubzilla is a powerful platform for creating interconnected based websites featuring a decentralised identity, communications, and permissions framework built using common webserver technology. Hubzilla is very suitable for communities (of any size).
Hubzilla vs Facebook opinions
Feature for feature, Hubzilla is the best decentralized, open source competitor to Facebook.
Compatibility with the Diaspora, OStatus (includes Mastodon), & ActivityPub (includes NextCloud) protocols allows it to communicate with nearly every other existing.
I am happy that after he created Friendica, Mike Macgirvin & friends have continued to push forward by creating and developing Hubzilla.
Unlike a centralized platform like facebook you can talk to other federated platforms and with a Nomadic Identity you are never locked permanently to one server , yet you can communicate across to other platforms much in the way that email does. In addition to not being locked.. you never need to give out a new address, you keep in communication when you migrate to another server, plus there are many free servers to use, or you can launch your own instance.
Every user can make private or public forums, a static webpage, an editable markdown based wiki, categorize posts and format them with BBCode. You choose what hub hosts your data, and you can clone your account on another hub to prevent distruption or data loss.
Used to be called Sgrouples, now its MeWe offered by the company Sgrouples Inc. On its homepage their motto is "The World's Private Communication Network" and "Join the privacy revolution".
MeWe vs Facebook opinions
No ads, better privacy, better features.
MeWe looks and feels very similar and has some of the same features like facebook with Pages,Groups & Personal Profiles that look more like a facebook profile then some of the other alternatives It also respects peoples privacy and is also ad free and they also support Free Speech to an extent.
Matches Facebook technologically as a platform, but the loudest voices in the community are conspiracy theories, antiscience, and MAGA types -- the platform actually promotes these people as "You should follow". Example: When you search "news", you only get "alternative news", not y'know NEWS. The platform need to attract and promote truthful content to counteract all the "alternative facts".
You can forget about Facebook. Mewe does it all.
Better alternative, it's worth it :)
MeWe offers almost all of the features Facebook does without ads. They also have a strong stance on privacy.
