DWService Reviews

Great software

I just started using it, the web interface is very clean and remote screen very responsive, a lot more than what I expected from a web app.

The clipboard transfert tool (so you can transfert notes from your clipboard to the remote computer's clipboard and inversely) is insanely useful, and is something I rarely seen in remote desktop tools.

It's also possible to transfert files, and there is a monitoring tab (mimicking the task manager: info about CPU and memory usage, drives space, etc.).

It's also opensource, which is just amazing. Kudos to the dev, that's great work!

Its really not bad, and administrating it is super easy... Seriously exceeded expectations for open source software thats free to use. Better than a lot of commercial options.

The best alternative for TeamViewer and Logmein.

I'm looking for a viable alternative to teamviewer, which lately is not as free/liberal as it used to be.

I've kicked dwservice's tires a bit for viability. Once connected to remote target machine, functionally this application provides the necessary service I'm looking for in terms of remote connection/control.

I've given low rating for following reasons:

  1. Numerous times, if the target's agent is idle for too long the user code and password changes arbitrarily. When this happens I can't make any further connections because I don't know the knew code/password from my remote location. It would be helpful if the application could be configured to email new code/password to user's account so reconnection is possible.

  2. Many people prefer portable apps. dwservice agent currently prompts whether agent should install or run uninstalled every time it is started. That is problematic because if/when (for any reason) remote machine restarts, agent cannot restart unattended. Even it if did, there is still the problem (above) that the agent will start with a new user code and password.

Developers of dwservice need to understand majority use case scenario that end users want to connect and control remote targets "reliably" first and foremost.

Excellent alternative to TeamViewer. Client config is stupid simple, web access is clean. All major operating systems supported including packages for Raspberry Pi, Wandboard, and Pine 64. After TeamViewer blocked my remote access incorrectly citing commercial access, I was able to ssh to my server and install DWService completely through the command line.

Only issues:

  • Limited bandwidth (more available with subscription)
  • Lack of transparency with central server. Same issue with TeamViewer; you have an account with DWService to access your computers

Self-hosting VNC exists if you are paranoid about the central server security, but I find the ease of access through DWService a reasonable trade-off for my home server.

This has potential to be a really good lightweight alternative for me to TeamViewer. It suffers from a few problems right now, you can't send the Windows key or Return. The mobile way of viewing is okay it doesn't not function all to well for me. Hopefully this software keeps improving and eventually the you can go run your own server which would be nice.

Very effective. Easy to install. Nice and easy to use. I stopped using teamviewer and had to find a replacement and dwservice is certainly what I was looking for.
