Direct Folders
Access your folders from anywhere
What is Direct Folders?
Access your folders from anywhere Just double click on an empty area located on the Desktop, Explorer or File Open/Save dialog box to bring up a menu. Select a favorite or recent folder from this menu and the file dialog immediately jumps to that folder. If you activate this menu from the desktop or tray icon, this folder will be opened in Windows Explorer. Now you can jump to any deeply nested folder in just a single mouse click! It also automatically resizes every standard file dialog, so that you can see a larger number of files. You will be able to find what you are looking for with a lot less scrolling.
Recent submenu This submenu displays a list of folders you have recently opened. First are the recent items in the current application, followed by global recent items. If you have copied any file to the clipboard, there will be two extra items at the end of the menu. This list also contains the path to any folder currently open in Explorer.
Info submenu This menu shows the amount of free space on each drive and allows the current folder to be opened in Explorer.
Other Features
- ClickSwitch

It allows you to save favorite directories for quick access especially in file dialog boxes for saving or opening files. Listary has some of this functionality and more but I find both together brings the best experience.

Direct Folders sounded like an alternative to FileBox eXtender which was extremely useful on Windows 7. Unfortunately DF 4.0 does not work on my Windows 10 1809. It keeps showing Invalid Index after setting up some folders and upon re-opening the config. After which all the folders disappear. It looks like it cannot write to the menu.json config file because that file always shows the same few lines:
{
"Direct Folders Menu": [
]
}
It never updates this file. Therefore totally unusable as it is.
I did not try 4.0 but I can state 4.1 works perfect with Windows 10 up to 21H2 and Windows 11 up to 22H2. Therefore this problem has been solved.

Switched from it to Quick Access Popup!
I've been using Direct Folder for two years and it is a real time saver. I switched to it in Windows 10 (64-bit) after X-Files Dialog stopped working. By adding the Direct Folders bar above save/save as dialogs, Direct Folder gives you instant access to the folders you choose, saving a ton of time and effort looking for those directories in the ordinary save/save as dialog boxes.
Direct Folders 3.8 released on April 22, 2017

This is an excellent program, which I've used for several years on Windows XP and now on Windows 7 64-bit. Very handy in many ways, and very much worth trying. There's a small problem with recent versions of Firefox, which I hope the developer will soon find time to fix.
The issue with Firefox is solved (version 3.62)

Version 3.62, the last update to this program, came out in June 2010. My comment (above), posted in August 2010, was based on that version. Direct Folders has not been updated since my comment, and it remains buggy in Windows 7 64-bit--especially, but not entirely, in Firefox. Alas, the developer of this program currently seems more interested in programming in for Android than in developing his Windows apps. Too bad . . .
I still use it, and put up with the occasional bugs, 'cause I can't find anything to replace it.

Yes, and I just tried it in my Windows XP laptop. The Firefox issue is still there, as it has been for more than one year with no fix from the developer. Too bad. Check out Listary . . .

Seems the On Top option does not always work on all windows like a pop out window for Firefox.
