Apps I Use on GrapheneOS

If you are using GrapheneOS on your main phone, then you have made the first and most important step towards privacy in your daily life (in my opinion of course). Most people use their phones more than any other device, and have their phones on them almost all the time, so ensuring that your phone is as private as you can reasonably and comfortably make it is a great move. Switching the operating system is only the first step however. If you move from an iPhone full of big tech apps to GrapheneOS and then install all those apps again, what is the point? Sure, you will have a more private and secure system, but you would subject yourself to being tracked every time you open an app. So, we need to find alternatives to these apps, that are open source, don't track us, keep everything possible local, and don't have an ulterior agenda beyond being the tool you are looking for.

Getting apps

You have two main choices for getting open-source apps: F-Droid and Obtainium. With F-Droid, you're trusting one central source that holds the signing keys for many apps, meaning if F-Droid became malicious, they could potentially compromise a bunch of apps at once. With Obtainium, you get apps directly from their developers, so if one dev gets compromised, it generally only affects their own apps.

Obtainium allows you to install and update apps directly from their releases pages, and receive notifications when new releases are made available.

This isn't an app store, but a tool for getting apps (I just did the "it's not x, it's y," but I swear... I'm not an AI!). You would find out about the app you want from another source (like this list, word of mouth, your own research online, etc.), find the releases page for it, input the link into Obtanium, and boom, it will download the app for you, keep track of it, and update it. It can also search for an app's releases page from several sources like Github, Gitlab, and Codeberg if you don't feel like finding it yourself. If you can't find the releases page for an app, you might be able to find a config on the Obtanium developer's site: https://apps.obtainium.imranr.dev/ (Tor Browser is an example of an app that needs to be installed this way).

  2. The minimal client app for the app store that respects freedom and privacy

NOTE: The Basic version of F-Droid Client has a reduced feature set (e.g. no nearby share and no panic feature). It targets Android 13 and can do unattended updates without privileged extension or root.

I mainly use F-Droid to discover and try out apps. If I like the app and want to keep using it, I find the developer's releases page and add it to Obtanium. If an app's dev only releases through F-Droid however, then I use it to download those. Get the normal "F-Droid" if you need nearby share (sharing apps with nearby devices), the panic feature, NFC support, and some small configuration options.

  3. Aurora Store enables you to search and download apps from the official Google Play store. You can check app descriptions, screenshots, updates, reviews, and download the APK directly from Google Play to your device.

A client that essentially lets you use the Play Store without an account (I believe they use shared accounts). I only use it for some proprietary applications I "need" like Google Camera. I also use it to download banking apps (which I keep in a private space) because their websites don't allow you to do all the same functions (probably so they can incentivize people to download the app which makes it easier to track them).

Communication

This is what phones were made for, right? But the methods that they have been using since they were made are extremely outdated now. SMS and phone calls. Seriously? It's been 30 years. I don't want my cell carrier, the government, and hackers to be able to read my texts and listen to my conversations with ease. So, the solution is to move to a secure, end-to-end encrypted instant messenger. This way, everyone excluding you and the person you are conversing with can piss off.

Signal is a communication platform that ensures privacy and security. It supports various communication modes like video calls (up to 8 participants), messages, images, videos, documents, voice recordings, GIFs, contact and location sharing, and group chats.

    keepitlocalkeepitlocal’s note

Signal is THE instant messenger right now. Easy for your grandmother to use, ahead of everybody else in encryption, privacy, security, and has the best user experience. The downside is that it requires a phone number or a payment through Google Play for account registration, although you can probably just buy an account off XMRBazaar. Signal-JW is a fork that I personally like to use because it adds some extra features, but for the average person, I would actually recommend using Molly (https://molly.im/). I wouldn't recommend using the base version of Signal as it lacks features compared to the two forks I mentioned.

I have to write Linux ISOs to USB drives pretty often, and it's extremely convenient to be able to do it from my phone. I also just love the way this app looks with the little glow of the logo when you open it.

A very nice two factor authentication app, made by a decent company. I should probably switch to something that is local, however I do like the safety net of still being able to access my 2FA codes even if my phone gets stolen though.

I hope you found some use out of this list! I noticed that a lot of people hear, "Switch to GrapheneOS! Switch to GrapheneOS! It will improve your privacy!" and they do so, but then they are lost when it comes to what apps to use. For a beginner, it can be difficult to discover alternatives to big-tech apps that they have become accustomed to. If you have any suggestions, be sure to leave a comment and I will try them out. I only included apps that I personally use to avoid this list becoming me just listing every app out there.

No comments so far, maybe you want to be first?
