pro-privacy; just as or more customizable than Vivaldi through extensions and CSS. Free/open-source software. Based on an engine and interpreter not made by Google but made by Mozilla itself.

At their core, both Brave and Vivaldi are descendants of Chromium. But Brave is FAR more committed to protecting privacy. It blocks ads and trackers out-of-the-box, it's faster and Private tabs use Tor for anonymous browsing. Brave is also fully open source (Vivaldi is kinda, but includes a lot of 3rd party cr*p) and doesn't have the normal nasty EULA.

It is way more privacy focused, but also much, much less customizable with many missing features

I think Brave can be a good option if you like crypto and it definitely has some similarities but in terms of customization it lacks behind Vivaldi.

In terms of privacy I think they are on a similar spot and one think I actually like is private windows with Tor Browser integration.

Overall I think there's two are to less similar, the only thing they share is a focus on privacy and that's the only reason why people use Tor.

As a main browser I would say it lacks behind in terms of features, but if you just want a private browser, go and use Tor.

It's actually not a great ALTERNATIVE to Vivaldi - more of a complement. Everyone should have it & everyone should use it whenever they feel the slightest concern about their traffic being tracked.

I think they main reason why people use Vivaldi is that there a searching an alternative to Chrome & don't like Firefox, Edge and other popular browsers.

At least that was the case for me, Chrome is developed by Google so of course it's in there interest to sell your data and move you into there products.

They have some „privacy features“ but I would recommend you to use literally every other browser except Opera & Edge, they also don't care about your data.

Vivaldi has committed to not implementing user-hostile changes in Chrome like removing support for older extensions (that just happen to be needed for ad blocking) or making the browser track you itself so ad networks sites don't "have" to (in a way that just happens to be easier for Google than for other networks) and so on. Chrome, on the other hand, has been turning into a funnel for Google services, with the advertising division calling the shots.

I like to think of Waterfox as a lighter and faster Vivaldi. It has a respectable amount of customizability, although it doesn't compare to Vivaldi's level. What it boasts instead is a faster browsing experience and (in my opinion) a firmer stance on user privacy. I say this last bit solely because Waterfox is open source, unlike Vivaldi, which is only partially open source.

    1. Much faster in my experience
    2. Even more customizable, just expect to spend more time doing so with extensions and possibly custom CSS
    3. FULLY Free and Open Source
    4. privacy oriented
    5. Supports most chrome extensions (the only exceptions ive seen are those that manipulate audio, though i opt for firefox-native extensions where possible)
    6. Longevity. It's good to know that it's been around for as long as it has (since 2011!), so I can know it's not likely to be discontinued.

Nearly as many features as Vivaldi including a sidebar and tab options, but with the Gecko engine and the extra privacy and customization (css) options that brings. It also adds useful features that Firefox lacks, like support for custom web browsers.

Comments about Opera as an Alternative to Vivaldi
    John Fastman
    Negative
    17

Opera is based on Chromium, and so is Vivaldi. But Vivaldi is innovative, Opera is stale and has abandoned its commitment to rethinking what a browser should be. Both are compatible with extensions for Chrome, and both are preferable to Chrome in terms of privacy. But given Vivaldi's existence, what is Opera for, or trying to do? Hard to say.

    Kelson V

    1

Every time I look at Opera these days, I get the impression they're more interested in squeezing out a little more profit for their parent conglomerate instead of making a good product for the people using it. One of Opera's founders left and founded Vivaldi, which has shaped up to be the real spiritual successor to the old Opera.

    Schmebi

A agree with Opera lost it's way, they are just pulling out one browser variant of another, making a gaming browser, a KI browser and so on.

But other then looking fancy, are they really good? Vivaldi was started because Opera rejected things developer wanted to do and now it's just what can we do that more people are using this browser from this shady company to make more money.
